I see 20 people have read this with no advice for you. Maybe if we have more information? What ages? What is the premise of your summer school? Is it academic enrichment, remediation, just for fun? Private or public? Is there a whole school theme? I know many private summer schools have a theme and a wide open curriculum, but public schools are very purpose driven in summer and targeted to a certain type of student.

Default More Info...

I apologize...a little frazzled with trying to get this together as soon as I can...I teach at a small rural public school...I hope to teach upper elementary students...there is no school theme...the main focus is on enrichment, however there will be remedial classes as well...I just have to think of a class idea which is acceptable for the administration and that I hope will get an interest of at least 15 students.

I don't know if this is what you are looking for but you could do some of the easier projects found on here and have the students 1) measure (math skills) 2) follow directions (language arts) 3) give directions to others (language arts) 4) create sketches (art skills) and so on.

The pop top cans are fairly simple and the upper elem. grades I think would get a kick out of the hidden surprise. The post it note holders are so neat and they could make them for teachers, family. Maybe they could create a card based on a theme and choose the top 5 favorites. You did mention scrapbooking. If there is a camera available at the school, they could snap pictures of the school and do pages on summer happenings or bring photos from home to do a page or even a mini scrap book. I just remembered the altoid tins could be decorated and made into mini photo albums. That is all my brain can think of right now. I am sure others will have good ideas.
I do hope this helps!

What about "adopting" troops/soldiers, finding where they are stationed, the geography of the area, etc.? This would be a great opportunity to teach the students while doing good for others! Or you could even do "Thank You" cards for community helpers in your area.

Another suggestion is for the students to each choose one person in the school who is not limelight all the time. Each student could make a card and list the positive things noticed about his/her pick. The cards need to be given to the recipient with the sender remaining anonymous. It's amazing how good it makes sender and recipient feel! Do this each week or even more often throughout the summer.

Good Luck!

I was thinking of scrappin book reports or history lessons... we tend to call it "interactive notebook". They can turn info from books, history etc into scrap pages to demonstrate comprehension. Also, being so involved with a topic helps reinforce memorization and understanding.

For math, measurements can be addressed by having kids convert a layout (say a 4 x 6 pic) into 2 other pics or seeing how many pics they can fit in a 12x12, 8x8, etc. You could also have them take pictures of object representing multiplication or division (8 rows of 5 apples) or (6 rows of 3 kids).. or (4 kids sharing 20 pieces of candy) and then scrapping the picture along with an explaination...

Just my thoughts!

I've done simple mini-albums with my class before. We covered squares of cardboard with patterned paper. Inside, we made accordion pages and glued them in. The students then used it to respond to elements of the story we had read (setting, character, plot, etc.) Another time, we used them and illustrated French vocabulary words about the classroom (a picture dictionary of sorts). Have fun with your summer school endeavor.

during the summer months most families take vacation and for at least a week there are loved ones sitting in nursing homes with no visitors why not have the kids make cards for a nursing home just to brighten the day of someone that is lonely always remember they always have stories to share with someone who is willing to lend an ear. It could work out for both ends. learn about the past for the kids and bring in a little sunshine into someone elses life.Old folks are our past young children are our future. Good luck with your summer school program and most of all make the learning experience fun.=) ~~bluegirl~~
