I bought a used stamp in the buy sell forum and when I got it it's in terrible shape. It has what I think is white craft ink all over it. It was not well loved but I sure paid a well loved price! Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.
I swear by Kiss-Off. It comes in a roll-on tube like chapstick only a bit bigger. I get it in a craft store by the artist's brushes. Sometimes it can be found in the laundry soap aisle, too.
Wet the stamp and rub a thick coating of the KO on the rubber, let it sit 10 minutes or so. take a wet, old toothbrush and gently scrub the rubber and then rinse. You may need to repeat, even letting the stuff sit on the rubber longer. I've brought some pretty nasty stamps back to life with this stuff!
Or, if you have any on hand, try a heavier duty stamp cleaner like Ultra Clean or Staz-On cleaner...the kind meant for waterproof inks.
wow, that's not very nice! I have also used masking tape. After cleaning it as much as you can with Ultra Clean or as Betsy has described above, take masking tape and repeatedly put clean tape over the stamp and pull off. it will continue to remove ink until the masking tape looks clean.

It might be time for UltraClean. It's a blue stamp cleaner (and it's kind of oily, so clean your stamp cleaning pad after you use it) but just use it like you would your normal stamp cleaner and your stamps will look brand freaking new afterwards. It gets off things that my other permanent ink cleaner will not. It's pretty easy to find in LSS's if you have one. It's an oily little miracle And it's blue..
I had a set that was pretty bad, luckily the person did disclose it. I don't mind staining so I didn't mind buying it. Anyhow when it came I gave cleaning it with Ultra Clean a go, just to see and it came totally clean. Not the wood, that never gets clean, but the rubber came totally clean! and it was a detailed stamp set too (Lovely as a Tree).
I hope you get it up to your standards! How does it stamp? I mean now with the staining? is it stamping ok?

I also swear by Ultra Clean ... its all I ever use since I first discovered it a few years back. And, well, Gina's demonstration above says it all - it really is that great! Good luck getting your stamp clean. I've gotten a few "dirty" stamps in trades also, but nothing that Ultra Clean hasnt taken away and made look perfect again.
Another vote for Ultra-clean. But I've also used Staz-on cleaner on RUBBER (not clear) stamps I've got in trades, which have had metallic inks like Encore, and have got the rubber, if not the wood, to look as good as new.
Good morning! I was wondering if anyone has any advice on cleaning the wood part of a stamp ( besides sanding) ...I have box of rubber stamps that are actually brand new rubber but horribly stained wood mounts !?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!
Thank you!
Cindy~

I will sure be getting me some Ultra Clean! Stuff sounds great. I got the stamps pretty clean. I put the stamps in warm water with Dawn dishwashing liquid and left them about 10 minutes. I make my own stamp cleaner and after I took them out of the soapy water I spritzed them heavily and used a toothbrush and they cleanded up better than I expected. I will redo them with the Ultra Clean when I get some. The stamping was never affected. The stamps worked fine, I am just a type A personality and I like things clean and in order. Thanks for all your responses. I love SCS.

I don't have advice for cleaning the wood after it's stained but to help prevent it. Years ago when I owned my rubber stamp store we used to have a customer who hated to have her wood stained, so when she first got a stamp she would put clear nail polish on the underside of the wood so it wouldn't stain Not sure it would keep off staz-on (we didn't have that back in the day) but she said it worked.

Yes, a little bit of toothpaste on a soft damp rag and rub lightly, just until the ink comes off.

I'm a little 'obsessive' about my stamps looking nice... had some stamps with stains on the wood part, so I used a q-tip dipped on a little bleach. Dabbed it on and the stains disappeared. Works best on colors and takes longer with black ink, but it works.
You can rinse with a damp rag and let dry. Then I sealed all my blocks. I haven't had any problems or damage to the wood from using the bleach.
You can try it on a few stamps and see what you think...

HTH!
I was reallly obsessive with staining on my wood stamps too. But then I had too many stamps to ink that I gave up staining each one. I've took the plunge, mount and stamp. I'm just alittle extra careful not to get ink on it but sometimes "accidents" happen. But I never thought bleach would take it out. Wow...Thank you as instead of sealing them and if I get ink real bad then I'll just bleach it. It doesn't happen very often. We also used a wrong stain color on our custom built shelve and it turned yellow. It was solid maple. We used some stuff on it and got it all out. The stain was water based so I'm assuming it would work too. We used a fine wool to rub it but then using a rag worked as well. I can't remember what the stuff is called but I'll try it and if it works I'll let you know what it is called.
I know that many of you may think, its too much work. I'm one of those that don't want the wood part of rubber stamp dirty. What I usually do, when I buy new wood mount rubber stamp, I apply Polyurethane, glossy. My husband suggested it when I asked him what is a good product to seal my wood mount rubber stamp. It's water-based so cleaning is very easy it dries very fast.

Since I teach card making classes at my lss, I really don't worry too much about staining any more. I clean them up the best I can and whatever staining is left, so be it! I also use Ultra-Clean, but because my stamps get so "used" in a night that they rarely look "good as new". I LOVE the Ultra-Clean for clear stamps too, works great!
My problem is my ink pads...........:(
I've had gals accidentally stamp a dark color into a light color or ruin the tips of my Tombows pens by pushing down too hard....
