Default Eyelet Setter

I don't know if my eyelet setter doesn't work well, if there is a problem with the eyelets that I am trying to use or if it is me (what are the odds of that :? ) ?

I don't remember the brand of the setter but it is a combo anywhere punch and setter. It has a metal part that you can screw 3 different sizes of punch or setter. Does that make sense?

I have some star eyelets that I cannot get to set. What end up happening is the points of the star bend and the eyelet itself never sets. I have had the setter for a while but haven't really used it because of the problems - I just started using brads but would like to use eyelets for the different effect.

Any recommendations on setters, eyelets or techniques?

Thanks,
Dana

I have a ClikIt, which I love. I never used to use eyelets until I got it. I had the kind that you had to hammer and got bad results. I have found that some eyelets are made of different metals that are harder to set. So it may be the eyelets and not you. The only thing I would say is to make sure you are coming down on it straight, but I still think it's not you, but the eyelet.

Is it one of those that looks flat on the top except for a little pimple in the middle. I think making memories makes this one. Stampin' Up's eyelet setter looks like a sharpened pencil on the end. Setting eyelets with stampin up is a little more complex because first you have to use the eyelet setter to spread the shaft of the eyelet you and then you bang on the eyelet with the hammer to flatten the back.

I have making memories and my sister has Stampin up. I hate mine and love hers. I'm giving mine away to anyone who wants it and I'm ordering stampin up with this order, next friday in fact. The one I have (making memories) causes the shaft of the eyelet to collapes to the side half the time instead of spreading out like a flower like it is supposed to and then the front of the eyelet looks all crooked and bent. My sister's stampin up setter, because it sits inside of the eyelet while you are setting, supports the shaft of the eyelet while it spreads the metal out. Hence no mangled eyelet.

Someday I'll learn to forget keeping my eye on the bargain and buy quality, but probably not today. In the mean time, does anyone want my eyelet setter? I'll mail it to you for the cost of postage....

I have a setter similar to what you are describing and have never had a problem setting the round eyelets with it. I have never tried shaped ones though. I know of some people that prefer the SU! setter because they have had problems (mangling of the eyelet) such as yours with other setters . You might want to try that setter if you can't get yours to work.

I found that with that type of setter, sometimes I have to just take the hammer directly to the eyelet after it starts to flair out. Not always pretty results, but the back of the eyelet doesn't show anyway.

I have several kinds of setters, SU!'s, Making Memories, and an off brand. But yesterday, I purchased Provo Crafts silent setter. Just let me tell you how FABULOUS it is!! It is awesome! I tried it with several brands of eyelets including SU!'s and MM, and it smashed all of them perfectly!! and with no noise!!

That silent setter sounds great, does anyone know the website for Provo Crafts? I tried provocrafts.com and that's not it.

Hi everyone,
I'm a newbie so be gentle. I bought my silent setter from a craft show in the UK and I love it, so does my DH who was heartily sick of my hammering in the dining room. It truly is silent and easy to use, you can feel the eyelet collapse as you push down.
If you would like one just type Provocraft silent setter into google and there are hundreds of stores who sell it. Hope this is helpful.

I love the Silent Setter. And yes, you can set an eyelet with one hand!

I will definitly have to check out the Silent Setter. It would be great because I have a dog that cringes everytime I try to set an eyelet. I am a late night crafter and worry about waking up the kids too.

Thanks everyone!

As someone else said it may be the eyelet and not the setting tools. I had that exact problem this weekend as did 1 other gal that was the same retreat as me. We both thought it was our tools so we swapped and tried another tool (either the basic hammer the setter vs my new Spring-let setter) and each time we got the same exact results. My eyelet was a tiny flower shape and the petals would fold down so it just looked like a round eyelet. Frustrating not being able to use that perfect eyelet for a certain card!

Concerning the original question about setting...
I have found in the past that I didn't have a firm enough surface for the eyelets to set...would not have believed it, but here's what I did:
I bought a small bamboo cutting board, it has a very hard smooth surface...then I put my setting mat on that, and set the eyelets with no problems at all! I had previously mangled, broken, and destroyed them with no luck at them setting at all! You may want to try the different "screw on tips" to see which works best with which eyelet shapes...but the cutting board made ALL the difference.
Hope you can find a cheap solution; I was previously ready to throw away all my Making Memories eyelets, (they aren't aluminum like SU's) because of the problems I was having. So keep trying! There IS a solution!
Good luck,
Diane
