It was recommended to me to take a course in card design as this would give me more confidence in creating my own style. The teacher recommended was JulieHRR, but she is not in Washington and her classes don't coincide with my schedule/location. Do you know any other designers that offer training? I am looking for training either in Washington State or on-line for:
I am pretty sure that JulieHRR lives in Washington - I thought it was Whidbey Island or one of those other little peices of paradise in the Puget Sound area. Maybe she moved, but have you tried contacting her?
Yah...Whidbey's small, lol...but we haven't kicked it out of the state yet! It is a ferry ride away, though. She does teach online courses through Amuse, I think (maybe?) and there was another online class...which I can't remember right now (which of course is NO help to you, sorry!)...
Ellen Hutson is in Samammish, too, (Ellen Hutson LLC). She has an online store as well as a classroom. Somebody will have her address...
I took Julie's online class on card design a couple years ago. It was great. The class was offered through www.mycreativeclassroom.com It doesn't look like they have it offered as a course right now, but maybe that will change?
Wish I could be of more help. But I can say that it was a fantastic class and I learned a lot.
Yes, Julie does teach classes but not very often. She is located on Whidbey Island, which is the reason why she does not teach a lot. I see that you are located in Sammamish. There are a few stamp stores on the Eastside that might be convenient for you. One is Impress at Bellevue Square, another is called Friends and Company. That one is located in Issaquah. If you keep an eye on the A Muse News blog, you might catch a class here or there that Julie might have to offer that's convenient for you or watch Julie's blog itself. The A Muse shop in Greenwood also offers classes and I teach for A Muse at a shop in Bothell called Stampin-In-The-Rain. My classes aren't necessarily technique based, though.
I hope you find something that suits your needs, either in person or online. I would also highly recommend a Karen Lockhart colored pencil class if you have the opportunity to take one. She is fabulous and you will learn a lot about coloring techniques and color choices. Karen and her team of instructors offer classes nearby frequently.
Feel free to PM me if you need any links to some of the sources I've provided.
Thanks to everyone for responding, I will be googling your suggestions to try and find an instructor....the idea of one being right here in Sammamish sounded great. It is hard to schedule going to Whidbey Island because of the ferry schedule....but I might try if I see something going on there from her site. I should have said Eastside Washington instead of Washington State....just that sometimes when I say Washington people think of DC.
I think I know what you're looking for...something that's more a design class than a class just making a few cards, right? Julie's class at My Creative Classroom was really good, it's too bad it's not offered now. You may message her and ask if it will be back in the future.
Most of what you're going to find in our local stores is going to be making cards on a theme, or basics for people new to stamping. You're way beyond that level, so it's hard to find, I'm sorry to say. If you find one, let me know, I'd love to learn more design rules.
I just wanted to clarify...Julie doesn't offer classes on Whidbey Island. That's just where she lives. She travels to stores off the island (and sometimes other states) to teach classes. Currently she is on Granville Island this weekend, teaching some classes there.
Yep - that's exactly right. Looking for more on design principles than just making cards together (although that's fun sometimes too). Funny you should give me that particular link because I just bought my first set of Copic Markers (isn't that funny!?). They should arrive Monday or Tuesday next week.
Thanks again for your posting,
Audrie

Thanks for the clarification (smiles) otherwise I'd be knocking on her door!

I went to a new store opening today at Friends and Family in Issaquah....I didn't expect to do anything other than check out what classes they have but I'm glad I did. Karen Lockhart was there and I got to meet her! She signed my stamps and even colored one directly onto the wood. Sometimes it pays to check out the local stores huh?!

oh cool!! i didn't realize/pay attention!!!
granville island is technically an island, but really it's a little piece of heaven in downtown vancouver...
how far is vancouver from sammamish? julie comes up here quite a bit, so that might be an option....

I design for: Stampendous!, There She Goes, Technique Tuesday,
SRM Stickers and Deconstructed Sketches.
I got my copics in the mail today and WOW they are soooo kewl. Smooth and easy to blend colors together - no paper tearing or brush problems. I also bought just two of the less expensive kind along with the Sketches - but there is a big difference in how well they blend. I'm already addicted to the Sketch type!!
I think My Creative Classroom decided to take the summer off. But you can sign up for their newsletter and get notifications when they start offering new classes again. Thanks for the info re: Friends and Family in Issaquah. I'm so sad that I missed their opening, as I would have loved to meet Karen Lockhart. I just LOVE her stamps!!
I am happy to say that Julie will be back with us this fall to specifically teach her design course. :-D Julie is a wonderful instructor.
I encourage you to sign up for our newsletter so you will be the 1st to know when her course will be open for enrollment.
We are taking the summer off to work on our website and allow our instructors to create new courses. I also wanted to add the we offer Copic courses as well. We want you to get the most our of your supplies. In fact Julie and Colleen Schaan have opened my eyes to the world of Copics....and my life has never been the same. :p
There is a cool scrapbooking store in Snoqualmie Ridge called Hip 2 B Square. I know Kimberly, the owner, does classes on layouts and design elements. I'm pretty sure she does it for cards and scrapbook pages. I'm in Issaquah and it only takes me about 15 minutes to get there taking I-90.
I know there are a ton of SU! demonstrators in my area (me included) that do classes, too. You could do a demo locator search and find one that has events on her calendar.
I have been there! What a coincidence. I love Kimberly and her store. All the people there are so friendly and helpful. I plan to go back when they have a mini-book class that meets my schedule. Thanks for sharing your thoughts....it is a small world isn't it!! I signed up to be part of her meet up here: http://www.meetup.com/hip2bsquare/

I did get to take a class on line and it was very helpful. All about design and layout elements. I'm hoping to get a face-to-face class too as this knowledge is definitely helping me feel more confident when I sit down to craft. Recently, I watched a TED presentation the other day that said something I won't forget:
Quote from the presentation: "If you are afraid of being wrong, you'll never create anything significant." Throw fear (and perfectionism I think) to the side - be like a child and give it a go. The speaker was explaining how children are not afraid to be wrong and told this story:
A little girl was in a class room drawing and the teacher came over and asked the child what they were drawing. The child said "I'm drawing a picture of God." The teacher said "...but no one knows what God looks like". The child said "They will in a minute."
Amazing story to me, shows that children don't evaluate every little thing - they just have a go at it!
