I started out with 2 small crates that are shabby chic painted. I love this because I can pick the crate up and take it to the workspace from the shelf.
I have friends that use the big cd towers. I see them at goodwill store all the time but they are more modern looking
i bought a CD holder in walmart for about $6....it is black and snaps together, it holds 30 jewel cases (goodness, i have that many clear stamp sets !!?)
I guess my problem is, is that I have close to 400 sets, so I am looking for something that will hold lots of cases at a time... Or that will stack, so that I can fit more in a smaller area.

I have smaller CD towers that hold 25 each. They were only $3 at AC Moore or Joann's. I painted them, and they work perfectly. With 400 sets though, they may not be practical for you. They had larger towers too.
400 CDs and growing is a serious storage problem. I guess I would compare it to our music CD collection. We had a cabinet custom built, and that is not an $ option you want to pursue. Even that cabinet is outgrown. The main portion is stored on shallow adjustable shelves. The overflow are in three rows in a drawer. If you can find a shallow shelf bookcase, add shelves and supports to suit the CDs. If you can find a chest of drawers in a thrift shop, have your measurements handy as to the height and width needed for two or three rows of CDs. The hardest hint to obey is to BE PATIENT and keep searching. Ya gotta kiss a lotta frogs to find your prince....the ideal garage sale or thrift shop or Craigslist item will appear eventually. In the meantime, make do with cardboard boxes or whatever.
I have 12 x 12 paper storage drawers that I got at WalMart. They come in units of three drawers each (for $10.97, I think) and they stack solidly on eachother. You can fit four stacks of CD cases, each stack 6 cases high in each drawer and there is some space between the stacks so it's easy to take them out and see what's there.
Mine go higher than I am tall (they are on a table), but the drawers slide out easily with a tiny squeeze on the sides. I mean, they don't just fall out, but with a little tug or a squeeze they come out easily. So for the high ones, I just pull out the whole drawer.
I label the outsides with abbreviations for the category or company name in permanent marker. When I want to change it, I scribble it out with a Dry Erase marker and wipe it off.
I have one column of drawers (each column is four units high) for SU stamps with Christmas paper in the top drawer and some PTI paper and cardstock in the bottom two; and the other column is non-SU and clear stamps, SU DSP and diecuts, then a drawer of embellishments and then some Basic Grey paper.
Then under the table I have two more units to hold all of my SU cardstock grouped by color family.
I think it's cool that you can use the same drawers for 12 x 12 paper, cardstock and stamps in CD cases! And if you decided to regroup or rearrange things, you just slide out the drawers and switch them around!
Have fun with your project!! Unmounting was the best thing I could have done
I bought a CD storage unit at IKEA. I believe it was around 35.00 and it came in a couple different colors. Mine is black and I went with IKEA because I had a very narrow area between my cabinets and my desk and it was able to be "lodged-in" perfectly with not an inch to spare! It is not very wide (8 inches) and it has 10 shelves in it.
I have not actually put my stamps in the CD cases...this is my summer project!
I did just put some of the cases on a shelf and it looks as if 16 cases will fit on one shelf. I am using the regular CD cases...NOT the slim ones.
So...depending on the space you have, these are pretty narrow and you could put them side by side withough it taking up alot of space.

I have 2 columns of these floor to ceiling for my papers and tools. I didn't think about trying them for the cd cases.

Me Again! I also have a Cd storage unit that I use for my backstock of ribbon. I bought it at WalMart, it has 6 shelves and glass doors. I believe it was around 30.00 as well and it is much shorter then the CD tower that I discussed above. This unit is wider and shorter then the tower.
I will post a picture from my gallery. The picture was actually showing the ink and ribbon storage but it might work for your CD storage

If only we had an IKEA here, I would go check it out... but we don't. :(

I keep mine in baskets that sit underneath my card catalog. the baskets are very long and just wide enough to hold the cd cases perfect. They fit 48 cases in each basket, and I have 3. I need more though, because they are full and I still have finished putting all my unmounteds/clear stamps in cases.
I found CD towers at Best Buy. They stand on the floor to about 3 feet high. I bet they hold at least 60 CD's and were about $11 each. I'm just starting to unmount my sets. What did you do with the old blocks and all the empty SU! plastic cases??
