This is funny that it popped back up again, and I find it interesting that so many have no idea about the *rule* or *dibs*, do you know *jinx,* or is that new to some as well?
My DH and I do the "jinx" thing ALL the time! Then we try to "jinx" the jinx. It seems like we are always saying the same thing practically every time we talk. I try to say "jinx infinity" but it is so much easier to just say "jinx" several times really fast. LOL

You got it Joan! How did you know - I come from a family of 5 - we laid out favorite colors early with the kids.....
Pink, Green.....my 3rd DD loves blue - "just like you Mommy!". Don't know what the boy likes - he adores blue too - but we cannot have the bickering! He may need to go to red....And the baby - still to be determined!!
i know this is an old thread, but it was linked so...i'm gonna comment ;)
we started out colors w/ my kids. it's not their favs though...
I wonder if those who didn't know what dibs meant have a clue what calling shotgun means. That was an even bigger deal in my family since there were four of us kids. That was also before we had to wear seatbelts and worry about airbags. Even the youngest person could call shotgun if fast enough (although I rarely was). Of course, even if I did call it, I was often punched by one of my older brothers and then ended up sitting in the back anyway.

My neice and nephews yell "Shottie". So, it's still around, just been shortened.

HA HA!! This is great! "WINDOW"!
Hee Hee... We played with "dibs", "jinx", "shotgun" and more... but now I am a youth pastor's wife.. and we call out "window" with a couple of our youth. If there are 3 of us getting into the backseat of the car, we call "window". As soon as you get outside, and see the car, you call it! If you are the one who doesn't call it first or second... then you are stuck in the middle. (just like the wendy's commercial) Mark, my DH is a silly driver at times... and at each corner, the two "window" seated people, squish the heck out of the one in the middle. He also drives swervy down some empty streets too... or in the parking lots. It's hilarious!
But anywho, about the "BLUE RULE"... I would be BLUE, or CRANBERRY CRISP... or OLD OLIVE, or CERTAINLY CELERY... or CHOCOLATE CHIP... or COOL CARIBBEAN... woow!! so many to choose!!! (Blue is my favourite colour-- then Green - then Red... )
CHOCOLATE RULES!! Chocolate with mint, with orange, with coconut...OH, you mean colors! Chocolate Chip with Cool Caribbean, Chocolate Chip with Brocade Blue, or Handsome Hunter, Certainly Celery, Pretty in Pink, or...a bazillion other colors. I LOVE CHOCOLATE!!!!
The Jinx game ended up being pretty crazy in my family: It started with screaming jinx at the same time, then "pinch poke, you owe me a coke" then the other would say, "Pinch back you owe me a six pack" then the next would say, "Pinch punch you owe me a lunch". However, since we all knew the words so well, it just meant my brother and I would say it all at once and gave us an excuse to have some bruises on our arms! LOL
Hmmmm...all the colors have been taken. I love RED though...so Red Rule for me
