Would a double colored backgrund work? Perhaps 7 X 5 sheet of one color next to a 7 X 5 sheet of another color, you could even then layer a 4 X 12 sheet over that to put your Headline Alpha letters on. Does that make sense? Or perhaps get a 5X14 mat at a frame type store that coordinates with the colors you are using in your project and then make the actual stamped project 12X5 or 11 X 4.
Let me know if you need clarification on that, it makes sense in my head, but I don't know if I explained it well.

I think this is a great idea... then you can wrap ribbon around the seam of where the papers meet up, or just put some extra embellishments on it.

You could use striped paper or plaid paper. Place the stripes running up and down and cut exactly at edge of a stripe and then butt up the next piece to it. Same can be done with plaids - cut at matching point on two pieces of paper and place together. The seam doesn't show.
I made a crazy quilt background on a name frame. I traced out the size of the background onto paper and designed a crazy quilt to fit exactly on this paper. Then I cut out the pieces and used them as templates to cut out patterned papers in different colours. I numbered the templates before cutting them out as it could be quite confusing trying to piece this together. I put about seven or eight pieces into the "quilt", I think - don't make them too small.
I hope that I haven't confused you too much. I am sorry but I didn't keep a photo of a name frame to show you.
