I've never used Paypal or applied for an accout with them, but today I received an email (supposedly from Paypal) asking me to please update my information immediately or my account would be closed in a week.
Has this happened to anyone else?? Is this a new scam??

DO NOT REPLY TO THAT EMAIL. I got 2 last year and made the mistake of replying to the first one. It was generated through a list that someone acquired from eBay and it looked really legitimate. I notified eBay right away and they informed me it was a scam. Notify PayPal right away and tell them you received the email. Be sure to copy and paste the email you got and see that PayPal gets it. NEVER give your personal information out like that...only if YOU initiate it...NOT them! Unforntunately...not everyone has CHARACTER to do the right thing in life!!!

Didn't eBay buy PayPal? I'm pretty sure they did. I used to get occasional emails like that from "eBay" -- of course, they never were. eBay has an email address just for this sort of scam. It's [email protected]. I'd send it to them.

Never reply in any way to them. I get at least three of these official looking account "verification" e-mails a week. Paypal or ebay will never ask you for personal information of any kind through an e-mail.
I've gotten 3 over the past year. I did not reply to any, but did go to the PayPal site and report it. Their site states very specifically that they will always address any mail to you personally - exactly as you are registered with them. They will never send a generic greeting. For more info see:
Just an FYI for everyone. Neither Ebay nor Paypal will ever ask you to update your account via email so never, ever answer any of those emails and always if possible report them. The same goes for all those Wells Fargo and Citibank etc. emails. They are all designed to seperate you from your money!

It's a good thing you knew you didn't have an account, so you could tell right away that something was wrong. In addition to the new "phishing" e-mails, do not ever give personal account info to anyone over the phone unless you initiated the call yourself and know exactly to whom you are speaking. A common scam is when you get a call or letter saying you won a prize, but must prepay "taxes" or fees before collecting it. Don't respond, because you'll never see your "prize", or the money you sent!

I fell for this one (and the first thing I thought was, "what college educated individual falls for this?"), but it looked so legit that I actually entered my pin number. Can you believe that? How stupid! It looked so real, and eBay asks for so much personal info, that I trusted it. It was a spoof, and someone stole everything in our checking account. Luckily, our bank protected us, but it was a real fiasco to close our checking account, etc. Don't EVER change any account information through a link in an email. Go to the website itself and log in. Lean from my mistake!! :oops: :oops:

Rachel is right about the phone calls too. I had one the other day supposedly from my gas company saying my account was past due (impossible because I'm up on that) and just for intrigue I hung on the recorded line and it asked if I wanted to pay the 'overdue' balance right now and if so to press 1 to enter my bank acct. info or press 2 to enter a credit card number. Can you believe it? But they do sound so legit and I hate thinking of all the people who are honest and think others are too and fall for that. So beware of these types of scams also.
I get these every couple months from "eBay and Paypal". I just forward the email to [email protected] or [email protected]. None have ever been legit. Always go to the site and login - never go by way of the link in the email. This will take you to a site that looks official, but isn't.
Sorry to hear about those that have been taken from these. If only the people with this "knowledge" would put it to good use - I wonder what they could REALLY accomplish!!

I am one of the one's that actually answered the info with my pin # too! I also was receiveing e-mails saying my e-mail had been changed to the name laptopseller, which I did not do. I was totally clueless to say the least! I realized what I did in less then 24 hours because I was like why would they ask me that? So, I hurry & closed all of my bank accounts & opened up new ones. I also had to go down & file a police report.
These "phishing" scams are quite old. I've gotten them from eBay (I don't even have an account), PayPal (again I don't have an account!), and some bank.
I don't even bother forwarding any more.
Delete, delete, delete.....

I was getting those emails also. I knew something wasnt right with it because I was getting them to an email that I just opened and never sent an email thru it nor did I give it out. So how they got my address, I will never know. But what I did was reply to the email and told them that these emails were being sent to the "authorities" (police) and I never got another one after that.

I've gotten a lot from banks lately and just last week I got an email from "stampinup" that contained a virus. Now, it wasn't REALLY from Stampin' Up!, just someone scamming their address suffix.
I, too, wonder what the losers who start these things "get" out of it! It would be so nice if they would use their skills to do good things for others.

I have had my paypal account now almost 5 years. The only way I ever go to their site is through their actual address. Never go through links sent in e-mails, they look so real and could be scams. If you do get an e-mail saying something then go to their actual address and check and most the time, nothing needs updated. Same with e-bay sometimes.
