I just took a canvas watercoloring class today at my local scrapbook store. We used Nuvo shimmer powders for background and embossed a sentiment from a stencil on top. Then we used Dylusions distress ink on brown Prima flowers and then on top after ink dried we used a shimmer spray on the flowers.
Had a blast and learned something new.
Now my question is should I seal the canvas? I was working in the kitchen and dried my hands, not well enough and I got a smear of color on my finger when I pick up the canvas to show my son.
I plan to display canvas either hang it on the wall or on a wire stand.
Would it be best to seal the canvas? I have yet to hot glue the flowers to the canvas. Would I seal the canvas first then put the flowers on, or put the flowers on and then seal flowers and canvas at the same time?
I would need a spray seal and using a brush would end up mudding the colors together. What kind of sealant would you recommend?
Or not seal and just not handle the canvas. Am I overthinking this?
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Hi ,
I am not 100% sure this would work on a canvas, but I recently came across this new product by Tim Holtz for sealing artwork on cards and more.
I did buy some and have been very happy with it!
HTH!!

Thanks looks interesting. I watched the video. Might use this on a smaller project I don't think it would work with the watercolor canvas I did.

Almost any clear acrylic spray sealant. Two to three very light coats. Artwork must be dry and set - if fingers smear it the sealer runs a good chance of making it run or spread.
Like dini, I use Krylon, and think their Crystal Clear is top notch. Rustoleum also has a good product as do other brands.
Canvas or other fibers will lose most of flexibility, though.
I use a spray sealant on my canvases - Krylon makes a few different varieties. I have a triple thick glaze and a matte one.
Thank you!

I ALWAYS seal my canvas' with an Acrylic Spray. Dina suggested a few above. I would SEAL IT! Just think of dust..... you will want to remove the dust eventually & that could pose a problem! SEAL IT!!! I would put the flowers on & then seal, they get dusty too! ;)
If you're worried about it running, make your first coat or two of the sealant verrrry light, and up from a distance, maybe 18-24 inches.
Thanks. I was thinking about keeping the canvas flat when I spray it, instead of leaning the canvas upright, just in case the colors do run. That a good idea?? Thanks for your help.

I would definitely seal it. I would give the canvas three light coats first and then add your flowers and seal it several more times.
Thanks. That is what I am going to do. Seal first then attach the flowers.

Why not just frame it so the glass will protector it?
I have prima flowers to hot glue to the canvas to finish up my project, so a frame and glass just won't do, but thanks for your input, much appreciated

Micro Glaze will definitely work on water color without a problem. If you are really unsure about it, try a sample. I've used MG on a variety of backgrounds and I love it. It only takes a minute bit - so just a bit on your finger will go a long way!

The MicroGlaze is a bit waxy though - not sure how it would affect your adhesive if you wanted to glue flowers on after sealing that way.
I was thinking the same thing. Also my canvas is 14 x 11 and I don't want to finger seal it. I just want to spray and be done with it.
Going to michaels tomorrow and looking for a spray sealant. That is if it ever stops raining!

Oh, Leslie! That is breathtaking! Thanks for sharing it here!!!
Thanks so much! I really took my time in this class because I did not want to mess it up. It was easier than I expected.
Now I know how to use these powder water colors, but I tell you the spray distress inks are big time messy!!
