Exclamation Anyone use PSE? Help!

I'm trying to create a party invitation. I have a photo selected as the background and created that layer.

Now I want to add text. I thought it would be easier to create a word document and just layer that over the photo. I saved the text as a .pdf and imported that to PSE. How do I "marry" the layers? The text is showing as a white background, and obviously I need it to be clear.

This is so not intuitive!

Wouldn't it be easier to just create a new blank layer over your photo and type it in there?

OK, I clicked on "New Layer" and it shows over on the right, but how do I "open" it to enter my text?

It's a vector layer, so you can resize it. Maybe this tutorial would help :
