I LOVE making Halloween candies out of the small York Peppermint Patties but the ones I am finding now are wrapped differently so they are no longer round. Help?
I think they still make some that are foil-wrapped, as opposed to the little cello packages that I've seen them in. Try Wal-Mart, if you have one nearby. Or a BJ's (or other warehouse store) You may have to stick to plain silver ones.
We get a big box of 200 from BJ's that are all still round and foil wrapped (although just the regular foil). My biggest problem is dh and I not eating them before I can use them for other things!
Generally I find the "regular" foil wrapped patties in the regular candy section of the grocery store, Longs, Prices Less, WalMart and the other type are in the actual seasonal candy sention which don't work for the patty favors. Costco/Sams also has the "off brand" that are in a plastic tub and they are usually in silver and green wrappers.
Good luck..such a quick, easy project that people LOVE
I'm curious as to what you make them into...do you have it posted somewhere?

Thanks everyone! I found some York and some off-brand. The off brand aren't as tasty but they work for my Halloween critters. They don't work as well for flowers on sticks because they aren't as thick. I read that York moved the factory from Penn. to Mexico. I wonder if the packaging changed with the move?

Here is a link to just one example (chose Halloween since it's that time of year), but there are MANY types.
If you go to the gallery, click on the "search" button and put in the key words "peppermint patty" (or something similar), you'll find lots of ideas; that's how I found this one.
I went looking for them last night at the grocery store (in both the Halloween and regular section) and could only find the new style of wrapping :(
Thanks so much for the other ideas of where to check - off to Walmart! I want to make the spiders for my daughter's preschool class.
I bought a bag a few days ago and was disappointed like you - they were in a rectangular cello baggie but then I looked in a different store and they were in the foil coin shape. So, I guess either they're switching and some old bags are still around or maybe they've always made both? Anyway, I say try another store!

We just got an "Ollie's" in my town. I think this is a chain store, but not sure. Anyway, they had bags there where the patty's were wrapped tight. Here's a link to my peppermint patty zoo.
I was surprised, and not in a good way, as well this week when I opened up the bag I got at Wal-Mart; cello squares and not wrapped tightly candies were inside. I was planning on making Halloween treats, too - not anymore, no time to go looking for the "right" ones.

I haven't been able to find any of the tightly wrapped foil York PPs either. I just sent them a message. It said:
I have been trying to locate packages of the York Peppermint Patties that were, until fairly recently, sold as round, foil-wrapped discs. From what I can tell, it appears that these are no longer being sold in this form. Is that correct? The reason I ask is this: The crafting community uses that form in ways shown here: Gallery at Splitcoaststampers
The pillow-type packaging that York Peppermint Patties are now being packaged in will significantly limit the ability of crafters to use this product in the ways pictured.
Please reconsider your packaging so that we crafters can continue to use this product and not have to resort to using another product for this purpose. This discussion has already circulated on the Splitcoaststampers.com website and, until recently, many crafters (including myself) thought the new packaging was only a temporary change. I am now suspecting otherwise.
Again, your consideration in this matter would be greatly appreciated, and I think would also be beneficial on your end.
Maybe it would help if we sent messages to the company HERE.

Brenda, I've sent a message as well. Boy was I surprised when I went to BJ's over the weekend and the large box of York patties now contained the cello bagged candies. I make so many favors with the foil-wrapped ones....I hope they hear us!

I noticed that as well. In fact, the reason I noticed it was that someone before me had opened up a box on the shelf--I think to specifically see what type of packaging the company had used.

Just a thought - I wonder if they switched so their candy couldn't be tampered with? Ya know, like for Halloween? The coin ones, in theory, could be unwrapped, tampered with, then re-wrapped and given out without a noticeable difference where as the pillow wrapped ones would be safe?

Good point! That may very well be the reason. I would imagine it would also help to preserve freshness.

Comments from our consumers are important. Hershey wants our products to reach consumers in the best possible condition. Our Marketing Department is constantly evaluating alternative methods of wrapping, molding, and packaging.
The packaging was redesigned based on consumer preference. Consumers surveyed said they would be more likely to consider buying this product after seeing the new package than they were before they saw it.
Reasons for this included:
. "The York Miniatures packaging was changed from the bunch wrap to fin seal packaging to improve the product freshness and safety. We welcome your comments and will share them with our Brand Management Team." .
This email address is restricted for outgoing messages only. For that reason, please do not respond to this email as the inbox is not monitored.
We appreciate your loyalty as a consumer."
I guess I won't be so loyal to this new packaging....I'll have to change to Palmer's or Pearsons!
Yorks taste so much better, IMO. I changed my projects to deal with the different packaging. Since I have to eat the leftovers, it's important they be the brand I prefer. ;)

I suspect that is also what many people will do, including myself on most occasions. However, there are times when you "need" the round shape.
It's unfortunate that the company is having to do this.

Please say it isn't so. I really try and not buy food products that are not made in the US. I love York peppermint patties. I will be really sad to not these leap into my cart at Target.
Sent a note to www.hersheys.com expressing my dissatisfaction with the cello wrapping...Not just food safety or freshness, this type of packaging has cost savings written all over it....

And if that is truly the case we need Country of Origin Labeling (COOL) on all food products, not just commodity meat.....
I hate to say it, but I agree with Hershey's that the new packaging is better for food safety and freshness. The foil-wrapped patties can be opened easily and re-closed to make look like they haven't been opened (my kids have done this!), and since they are not sealed, they are exposed to air and don't stay fresh as long.
I've had to redo some of my peppermint pattie crafts to go with rectangles instead of circles and it's not impossible. For the crafts that HAVE to be round, I've taped the corners of the packaging snug up to the pattie to make it look round, and that was okay, too. Honestly, people haven't seemed to notice what shape the package is. The ones that even take the time to notice the decoration still think it's darling, and the rest (the majority, sadly) just rip it off and eat the candy.
Granted, I'm a little OCD about food safety, but the new packaging for the Yorks is okay with me. And I think there are a couple other brands who still use the round foil wrapping for those who really need the round patties.

unwrap the cello/plastic wrap, and re-wrap with foil??
If my kids received a rewrapped candy, I'd make them throw it away. I would not eat it, either.
Some schools don't even allow home-made treats anymore. Snacks and such have to be store bought and in store packaging.
I don't blame schools for being super-safe about this. Unfortunately, there are some sickos out there. Additionally, I simply don't trust the cleanliness of some unknown person's kitchen/house. Some people let their pets into the kitchen and/or use their own (ungloved) hands to mix cookie dough and such. Sorry, but that turns my stomach. I'd rather my kids have store-bought.
