That's hard for me to say. I really wanted Born to Ride ... really bad! But I wasn't willing to pay $50 for it, which was (is?) the going price on EBay.
My sweet husband made arrangements for his parents to get me the set for Christmas.
I think the most I paid for any retired set was around $25.
It is not always what is retired that you will pay the $$ fro...there is a current set, I only want one stamp from it and am going to pay $35 for that stamp!

Why pay that money just for one stamp?....especially if its a current set?. Surely you can get the whole set from a demo?. Or am I missing something here?.
Funny, it's the '"BORN TO RIDE" set too that I want.
Though, I don't want to spend the $50+ that I'm seeing on ebay either.
I'll just keep looking.
I kinda agree why spend more than it is (or was). Sometimes I'm amazed.
Julie,
I have paid a good penny for a set that I had to have_ love bakes, old fashioned stove and country cupboard cost me over $150 on the bay.
That was a time when I had "more discretionary income" ... today well....

I had to chuckle--I sold Old Fashioned Stove to someone for $5, years back after it had been retired.
The buyer was so happy--she had Love Bakes and all the other related sets but that stove. She told me I could have sold it for 10x that on eBay . . . who knows--mebbe she did! ;)
*chuckle*

I'm with Julie. I have never paid more than the original price for any stamp. In fact, I am always looking for a bargain.
When SU puts something on sale, I am more likely to buy it because I can get it for less money.
I don't like paying full price for anything, I love a good deal! I have already bought a few things here on SCS in the buy/trade forum and got some really good deals. I also look for people selling stamps in lots on the bay, sometimes you can get some pretty good deals.
Of course I have no idea what the really popular or collectible stuff is. Right now I am searching for Penny Black and House Mouse because they are all so cute (bought some penny black on here the other day at a good price).
I have never even seen any of the love bakes stuff, I am going to google that now though as you all have me intruiged!

I don't mind paying full price for something I like/want and know I will use a lot--I just have a hard time paying MORE than original MSRP, and unlikely to do that.

I have some great older and long retired Penny Black and PSX that would probably fetch well on the auction sites, if I wanted to mess with it. But, it's kinda hard to part with those because of sentimental value; many of them were gifts from my Mom, and they are absolutely gorgeous--botanicals, etc.

One of the most popular and highly coveted sets, I'm guessing--based on how hard they are to find nowadays. ;)

I would hang on to the Penny Blacks too, they are great stamps. I am just starting my collection but don't think I will ever want to part with any of them!
I still can't find any of this love bakes stuff on google or bay so it must be hard to come by. I am going to keep looking because now I REALLY want to see!
Most I ever paid for a retired set was $44 for Penguin Paradise when it was going for $50 on average...it's cheaper now. Usually I am too cheap to get anything that has been retired and is sought after...I am actually too cheap to keep it if I get my hands on it.
A year ago I saw a lot of sets on craigslist and emailed for the list of names...it was the whole lot for $100...guy was selling stuff he found in his dad's house after he died. He sent a list of some images and I jumped on it when I heard horses, wolves, lighthouses...
Anyway, there were about 30 sets...including Yukon, Equestrian Dream, Born To Ride, For Love of Chocolate, Wolf, Tractor Time, Coast to Coast and a bunch more. I was in HEAVEN. Thought I would have an AWESOME collection....till I checked values on Ebay.
SOLD THEM ALL...for about $1200 total when I was done. Equestrian Dream and Tractor Time each went for $75!! I was shocked...they had both been going around $50-60 at the time.
That was FUN!
I was too cheap to keep it...and had an ounce of guilt...except the guy was glad to get rid of this stuff and have $100! LOL

The most I've ever paid on a retired set was $25 for the Holiday Hedgehog one & Like it a Latte. I'm debating on spending $40 for the set For the Love of Chocolate which I really want. I saw the set a few days ago for $15 but 2 people were ahead of me & of course their sale went thru =( Do you think I should buy it for $40???
$58 for the wild horses set. Bought because my daughter LOVED horses at the time and I had a friend who wanted a birthday card with horses for her sister. Shipping was kinda high on the set if I remember right - $8 or 10 and that was maybe 4 or 5 years ago. Also got caught up with Kitty Kapers and Bow Wow at $35-40 a piece. OUCH....not doing that anymore!

Most of the sets on ebay that go for a ton of money, will keep their value (MOST, not all!) Buy it, use it, resell it! Even if you pay $50 and then only get $25 when you resell it, you will have had it for $25 the whole time.
Why pay that money just for one stamp?....especially if its a current set?. Surely you can get the whole set from a demo?. Or am I missing something here?.
I believe what Karen meant is that there is a current set out there for 35 and she really only wants one of the stamps in it so its going to cost her 35 for one stamp.
Sorry if I'm wrong but that's how I took it, because I've had some of the same things happen especially with prices going up for reg. price.
Hmmm I don't remember exactly the price, I think I actually got it for a bargain, but it was an old version of the plaid making set for SU...I think dated around 1995. I actually got it for around 10, but I think that my high bid was going to be about 25.00 or 30.00. Also, there was a set of FOAM Stampin Up patterns in mini like ticking stripes, dots, pindot plaid and I paid at least 15.00 for those...and again for FOAM, hee!
When I find a set on Bay that I would like, I take into account how much the shipping is, what condition the set is in and what the exchange rate is. The most that I have paid for a set is $45 with shipping and exchange.
A couple of weeks ago I spent $38.40 for SU Wolf. That included shipping. I was happy with the deal. I've been wanting that one for a long time! Its been going for $59.99 or so on Buy It Now on ebay.
I've never been after a stamp set, but after seeing this: Christmas In July 2008 by inky*fingerz at Splitcoaststampers by inky*fingerz, I HAD to have that stamp. I checked the 'bay daily for months until I found it. I paid about $15 including shipping. That is the most I have ever paid for a single stamp.

I do the same thing. I purchased Up in the Air for $40 on ebay since I really wanted the airplanes for 'men' cards. I sold Harvest of Friendship for over $50 on ebay, I really liked the set, but I never used it. Recently I purchased a set for 99 cents In Full Bloom so it cost 99 cents plus the $4.80 shipping. I was very happy about that purchase and I have already used the set. I really want Winter Wonderland but don't want to pay over $40 including S&H.
