What is your favorite to color stamped images? I am wondering if I should get some copic markers! I have watercolor crayons, watercolor pencils, some prismacolors, and chalk. I also have various markers. I am trying to get bright color when I color in my images. And I want to have a darker outline than the rest of the image. What is your favorite product and what results do you get when you use them? Thanks for your help and suggestions!!!

I adore my prismacolor markers. I get wonderful results with them. Like every technique, they take practice, but at the cost of copics, I opted to practice, lol. I have samples in my gallery and on my blog if you are interested.
I love, love, love my prismacolor colored pencils with baby oil the most. I was looking at the copics too, but have decided to hold off until my pencil buzz fades. I got them a few years ago, but I still love them. Once I found out I could use baby oil instead of OMS I fell in love with them even more. Hubby had already agreed to at least one of the 72 pen sets, but I didn't see the need to go down that road just now.

This is exactly how I feel about it. I only have a few Prisma pencils but I would rather invest in them than Copics. They are way to expensive and from what I have heard hard to learn to use.

I love the prisma markers too, and I'm getting better with them! But my first love is the prisma pencils. They work perfectly for detailed stamps, and I don't worry about using anything to blend with, except a colourless blending pencil sometimes. See the Thomas Kinkade cards in my gallery- I'm going to try a TK image with the prisma markers soon, and will post the results of that when I'm done.

I'd have to say, it all depends on the 'look' I'm going for. There are some images that just scream for certain mediums... that said , here are my top...
1. Copics
2. SU watercolor Crayons
3. Prismacolor pencils
4. SU chaulks
I would suggest that you way the pros & cons of the Prisma vs Copic markers ~ and if you can, test one of each. I love the fact that Copics are refillable! And that I can replace the tips. Also, I find the color selection & the barrel size to be more comfy. When I did some Googling ~ I read a lot of complaints that Prismas had a tendency to dry out on one side (the tiny point) ~ don't know if that's still as issue, but still something to consider.
I actually find Prisma pencils harder to use than the Copics ~ and frankly, nothing I use will ever get my creations to look like some of the fine super ~ uber talented ladies on this board! For example, Otagogirl's TK card ~ ain't notin' gonna make mine look like that!!! EVER!!! And if I let that bother me ~ I'd just have to quit stamping all together! BTW, Otagogirl ~ that is simply STUNNING!!! I'd love to look at that baby up close ~ your attention to details & the mix of colors ~ stunning!!!
I have to agree with Rachel regarding the Prismacolor markers. They are very similar to Copic as far as results go because they too are alcohol markers. The price difference is pretty big. The main differences besides the price are that Copics offer a much wider color selection and they are refillable; the nibs on Copics are also replaceable. When a prismacolor marker runs dry, you pretty much have to replace it.
I have all of the Prismacolor markers, and just started to add Copics to widen my color options.
All that being said, my fave way to color is still Prismacolor Pencils and Gamsol.
I love my prisma colored pencils and baby oil. I tend to do a lot of coloring because I can't afford a lot of different colors of Ink. I use my black stazon ink and color away.
Love my copic markers! They are just about the only thing I color with. They will last you longer than the prismacolor markers since they are refillable and you can change the nibs. Good luck with your search!
I love them ALL! I use my SU markers, Watercolor pencils, watercolor crayons, dye inks with the water brush, Prismacolor pencils and OMS, Copic markers, twinkling H2Os....ANTYTHING and everything I can get my hands on!
Each product works just a bit differently and gives a different look. If you are thinking Copics, check out Marianne's blog... I Like Markers...
she is awesome!
good luck!

I've never heard of using odorless mineral spirits OR baby oil with Prismacolor pencils, but I'd like to try it. Could someone fill me in on this technique? Do you need a particular kind of cardstock? Black ink? THANK YOU!

Hi Bonnie,
Here is a link to the Gamsol Magic tutorial which uses the Primacolor pencils and odorless mineral spirits (the best product to use is Gamsol, IMO)
Dirty Dozen alumni PrincessInk, aka Cecilia Ross put this together. If you want to be totally wow'ed check out her gallery!

 aw gee shucks! Thanks! It's just coloured with prisma pencils, then I cover it with clear EP and heat. Makes it look more finished. I just follow the colours on the stamp, so Mr Kinkade should get the credit. I'm posting a new one today, if I can get my camera to cooperate.
Karen (otagogirl).

Gina K did some good tutorials on her blog on colouring:
It's a great fun technique, and not difficult.
HTH!
Karen.

I Love my Copics I like that they are refillable and the tips can be repalced/changed. The best price I have found is carpediemstore.com I prefer the sketch style and get them individually for $3.95 each.
I also love the Prismacolor Pencils and OMS( I use Mona Lisa Brand).
Just wanted to add that before I tried these two techniques I NEVER colored anything Hated it but now all I want to do is color!

I just ordered a slew of Copics from Carpe Diem too (great prices) & they'll be here tomorrow. I hope I can play some this weekend! And I totally agree Patti, I never used to like to color. I learned the Prisma/OMS technique and it opened my eyes to coloring. Now I love to color!
I love to color with copics, prismacolor colored pencils or watercolor. I find myself coloring with copics more these days and I am experimenting coloring them with adding some Prismacolor color pencils. I have seen some lovely images watercolored with ranger reinkers and would like to try those someday.
I first started coloring with aquarel pencils. Then I wanted to try derwent pencils with OMS. I like these techniques both and I often use them. I also use OMS with my aquarel pencils. It depends on the image I am using of the color of the cardstock or paper I want to use which pencils I will be using. I do want to try copics, but they are so expensive and also hard to get in holland, so I don't think this will ever happen.

Your TK cards are amazing!! Now when you say prisma pencils......do you mean the prisma watercolor pencils? I have some of both. I just bought some prisma watercolor pencils and I really like them. I used a 50% off coupon from michaels to get them. I use my dove blender and also baby oil with blending stumps. I tend to like my dove blender better becuase it has a pointier tip. Thank you so much for sharing your tips! and gallery!!!

That's interesting that you still love the pencils! I have heard so many people say that once they tried copics, they never colored with anything else. Thanks for you input!

The last couple of days I have been using SU's watercolor paper becuase it doesn't curl when you color. I have used other regular cardstock (i think the one I used is too thin) and after I cut them out, they curled.
I have used the regular prisma pencils and the prisma watercolor pencils. I have also used other really cheap watercolor pencils as well as regular colored pencils. I have tried them all with baby oil and a blending stump. I find that I have to rub too hard to blend the colors. So I switched to my dove blender which is what I have used for years. Oh I forgot to mention I use it with SU's pencils and watercolor crayons too. I find that I don't have to rub so hard with my dove blender. Maybe I am doing something wrong with the baby oil. I don't know. I do know that you have to use a permanent ink to stamp with. Can't use markers to stamp with and then think that you can run a blender close to it. I found that out the other night. I stamped a sentiment by coloring the stamp with a marker and then I wanted a shadowed effect around the word and as soon as the blender even came close to the word, it ran! I use my Stazon pad. Oh I did learn that STazon WILL NOT WORK with alcohol inks. you have to use the adirondack permanent ink. The guy demo-ing the copic markers showed me that when you go to blend and you hit the stazon ink, the black pulls into the color! YUCK! So that was a great lesson learned!

You know my vote is for the Copics! I just can't stand coloring with anything else now...they have ruined me! We are going to need another assignment here just so I can afford to get replacements! LOL

I don't have a favorite, but, I reach for certain coloring tools, depending on the effect I want, and the type of paper and images I'm working with!
With open line designs:
On Fabriano Mediovalis (similar to watercolor paper), I like to use watercolor pencils (I own Derwent, and they're lovely); sometimes I use watercolor crayons, but, my pencils are more accessible, so I usually use what's within reach. LOL!
On Cryogen White, I enjoy using any of the aforementioned.
On kraft paper, I'm discovering that I like to use Faber Castell Pitt Pastel Pencils (like chalks, but, in a wonderful pencil form!--they're AWESOME! Spendy, but AWESOME!). Still experimenting with that one . . . ;)
For multi-colored solid images:
I usually use watercolor crayons or water-based markers, and mist gently with water just prior to stamping, and do not use Neenah Classic Crest, because it's not designed for such wet mediums as that, and will buckle, bubble or pill.
Alcohol markers, such as Copic, cannot be used to color directly to the rubber, just so you are aware of that; the alcohol ink will dry too fast.

I have found that for the most intense color, and the effect you describe above, I achieve that most easily with Copics. Kate Sanders (a.k.a. Colorin' Kate) did a wonderful tutorial for SCS, which shows exactly how to achieve the effect you are describing: Coloring and Shading with Copics
HTH!

my all-time favorite way to color is this my colored pencils and maybe a colorless blender. If I'm really ambitious, I'll pull out my OMS for blending.
That said, I also love to use my alcohol markers (I have Copics and Prismas), and my watercolor pencils and crayons. Oh yeah, and I really like my shimmery watercolors, too. :p
