Bermuda’s original capital (from the early 17th century until 1815) is steeped in history. Settled in 1609, it was the second English settlement in the New World, after Jamestown, Virginia. The settlement of Bermuda began in what is now the town of St. George’s nearly 400 years ago, when the Sea Venture was shipwrecked on Bermuda’s treacherous reefs on its way to the colony of Jamestown, Virginia. Unfinished Church (left page Top left & center)
The Unfinished Church is a Bermuda National Trust Property. Construction of the church started in the 1870s. The magnificent Gothic structure was meant to be a replacement for St. PeterÂ’s Church. The new church was beset by a series of problems, financial difficulties, a rift in the Anglican congregation, and a damaging storm, and abandoned on the eve of completion. Today, the picturesque ruins are a protected historic monument and part of the St. George's World Heritage Site.
