Another card I made for my mom's birthday. I chose a paper from "Splash" that I assume is supposed to be the tops of beach umbrellas. I just thought the colors looked very festive. I also chose a yellow with faint white strips on it from "Simple Life." I think this is a good example of using "non-themed" products for a themed project.
I die cut a circle from watercolor paper, and cut the left & bottom sides to make a right angle. I stamped the image onto that with Versafine ink, and painted it with my Mission Gold watercolors. I also started painting the stripes in the background, as suggested by the product packaging, for wallpaper. Unfortunately, my stripes quickly went awry. So I went ahead and just painted the upper part of the background solid blue. Of course, the stripes I had painted showed darker, and my blue "wall" ended up going way too low, so the perspective with the image was messed up. (Basically, the rug looked like it was part of the wall! :P) So, after the watercolor had dried, I got some white acrylic craft paint, and repainted the floor with that. I did mark a straight line, parallel to the bottom edge of the panel, so I would get my floor straight & properly positioned. After that, I painted white stripes on the background, which hid the "mistake" I'd made with the watercolor stripes.
I cut the patterned papers, as well as lavender & teal cardstock panels, to the sizes indicated in the sketch. I adhered everything together with my ATG adhesive, mounting the background paper first onto a white card base. I stamped the greeting on a small strip of light teal cardstock with Versafine. I adhered my focal panel & the greeting strip with more ATG.
Then I noticed a small black spot on the yellow patterned paper. I couldn't sand it away, since then I'd have a larger white spot where the core of the paper showed through. So I decided to add a sequin to cover it up. Which of course meant I had to add more sequins, to make it look intentional. After I played with placement a bit, I finally decided to glue them roughly following the curve of the focal panel. At any rate, it does add the to the festive look of the card! The funny thing was, when I was placing the sequins, before gluing them down, I kept removing the sequin over the spot, thinking I didn't want it there--when that was the very reason I was adding sequins to begin with! But, I think it came out looking good in the end, which is all that matters. And my mom loved it!
