I bought the magnetic sheets through SU 3 for 9.95. These are made for the BS at 6 x 13 and fairly thin. They are adhesive backed so I just cut one slightly shorter than my standard cutting pad and adhered it to a new, unused plate. It's permanent and I just use this pad for my Spellbinders.
The bottom of my Spellbinders sandwich is the magnetic plate then my die (cutting side up) then my card stock and on top is a regular cutting pad.

I guess maybe I'm not getting it. I get the idea of attaching the magnetic sheet to the new cutting pad, but then wouldn't every time you run the sandwich through, the edge let would cut the magnetic pad?
Maybe it's too early and I haven't had enough coffee yet.

When I use the magnetic plate I put the smooth side of the die against the magnet sheet and the cutting side up, then the paper and then the acrylic plate. When I have an image already stamped that I want to cut out I will center the die over the image and tape it on with removable tape and then flip it over so that the cutting edge still goes against the acrylic plate.

if you still need to tape the cardstock with the stamped image to the die, then doesn't the magnetic pad become obsolete?
Or am I missing something behind what the purpose of the magnetic pad is?
I thought it was so that you don't have to tape everything in place each time.

The new magnetic platform from Stampin' Up! makes this technique obsolete, their magnet is much better than the one I used. I used tape when I had a very close cut and I wanted extra security that my die wouldn't move. Otherwise I used the magnet plate without the tape.

I have the magnetic plate from Spellbinders and would love to know how to use it. If the items are already stamped, which they usually are, I find it difficult to use the magnetic plate without cutting into it. How do you do it?

The new SU magnetic base has super strong magnets in it. Here is the sandwich I use:
Magnetic Pad
Acrylic plate
Paper with image face up
Die cut with cut side facing down
Acrylic pad
The trick is to get the die cut in a good spot, lined up on a magnet. SU's magnetic base has several little magnets built into it, not just one large one.
I haven't used the Spellbinder one so I'm not sure how it works.
