I made this card for the November VSN, “Cabaret”. Hostess Jimmi (jpmayo)’s favorite movie is Moulin Rouge and that was her focus in this challenge. I also love the Moulin Rouge for the same reasons she does, yet this was the most difficult challenge for me to come up with a plan for!
Jimmi gave us a series of pictures to choose from and I immediately gravitated to the one on the lower left corner of her photo collage. I love the deep blue and cream combination but couldn’t really see what the central image was – when I enlarged it, it was too blurry – and so I wasn’t sure how to relate it to something from the movie (creatively and artistically speaking, that is).
Somewhat at a loss as to how to express the picture in terms of the challenge, I reread her instructions and keyed on two of her comments…. “…everything about the Moulin Rouge is beautiful…” and “…Whatever your inspiration may be, just create something that is beautiful to you!”
So I did. With two of my very favorite K&Co. papers, I created a fan of sorts which I embellished with gilding and paper lace, and mounted an inspirational message onits hub. Mounted against a vintage backdrop, it is beautiful to me.
If IÂ’d had more time, IÂ’d have made fancier blades. For these, I cut a simple paper template to use as a pattern and then cut them with my rotary cutter and edged them with punched lace. Simple and quick, once I figured out what to do! IÂ’ll post a template and instructions on my blog when I get a chance.
PSÂ…. The butterfly is stamped and then stamped off. I cut around both images, and layered the lighter one over the darker one.
Also, uncharacteristic of me, I didn’t brush the edges of my torn central background. I was rushing and got ahead of myself and taped it down prematurely. It’s too bad because as I was putting it together, I decided that the dark blue card I was putting it on really wasn’t the “right color”, but I was stuck with it at that point. I think a subtler shade of blue or a darker cream would have been better.
