I want some. I have two, but they are yucky sizes and they don't layer well.....and the ARE NOT WHALE TALE!! What tag punches do you recommend, where did you get them, and where can I get the best deal???
I have a whale tail tag punch made by Paper Shapers. I got it at AC Moore with a 40% off coupon. It is nice, but there is no layer. Actually, I wonder if you could line it up on your paper cutter and layer it like you would a rectangle or square, then cut the top edges (that makes no sense does it?) I may have to go try it and report back.
The other tags I have are coluzzle, sizzix, and sizzlet. The sizzlet ones are my favorite, but I'm usually too lazy to pull out the machine and cut them!
I also have the Paper Shapers (EK Success) tag punch and love it. I purchased mine online at JoAnn. If you purchase today from JoAnn it's 40% off. Here is the link...
I know a lot of people really dislike using Coluzzle, but I LOVE my Coluzzle tag template. They later really nice too...3 sizes for each of 3 different tag designs! So you get a total of 9 different tags
I have 3 different sizes of Marvy ones that I got at Michael's for 40% off. But they are not the whale ones that you want, and yes, I usually have to stand up and put all the strength I have to punch a tag (especially with SU paper, LOL) but I do like the end results and how well they layer. I was also very surprised that SU didn't have tag punches this year, don't they know how much we want them!?

Oh, me, too!!! Gotta admit, it's more cost and storage effective than punches or die cutting machine. I LOVE my Coluzzle and their templates are SO awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!

Now that I've finally figured out how to use my Coluzzle, I love it! Used the 3 tag template to create 8 layered tags last weekend and they were so easy to do.

I love mine too! I don't get into all the cutsie templates like stars and hearts... but I'm crazy for the tags! So, so easy to use!
Although, I'm sure I'd have to buy tag punches if SU started carrying them! ;)
There is a brand of punches that have 3 different size tags on ONE punch. They aren't real big but they have several different styles. They are yellow.....and I'm drawing a blank on the company. It may be McGill or Emagination. They carry them at the SB store I teach at. I can check into it if you want.

me too and now they are adding mini file folders, mini envelopes and library pockets.....I LOVE THEM ALL!!!!!
edited to add: I also have the whale of a punch...and I use the metal discy thingie (yes, that IS the technical term for it...LOL) to trace around it for layering...
I just saw tag punches in my Paper WIshes catalog. I think their website is www.paperwishes.com. They have the three in one punch so you have three layers. They also have different shapes of tags. Hope this helps.
I broke down this week and bought a Coluzzle. I hated it at the last workshop I attended, but needed something to make squares big enough. Now I have my own, I really like it once I figured out how to use it. I also bought the tag template and love it. I rarely use punches and they take up way too much space when storing.
Love the Coluzzle too Especially the envelope template.
The tag template was the first I purchased and being a newbie I marked the whole deal up learning on it :( It still works ok though but just makes a little more work for me. Coluzzle is great when you are making just a few of something but for multiple I like a punch or diecut. For perfect ovals and circles though I use the Creative memories cutter-
I love the Coluzzle Tag template too. Like others, I also use the envelope template + the square. I just received the file folder template from joann.com - haven't had a chance to play with it yet. I have a few punches (squares, circles, etc) but find I reach for the coluzzle pretty frequently.

After reading this, I'm thinking about buying the coluzzle tag template. someone please tell me how to use it!? I'm seeing a lot of people say they have/had trouble learning.. HELP! thanks
my knife gets stuck around the top edges :( Do I need a new blade, or am I cutting it wrong?? It cuts into theplastic and just generally doesn't do what I need it to.
I really WANT to like this! Especially 'cause it layers!

A couple of things to check:
~Are you holding the knife STRAIGHT up and down, not slanted like you would a pencil/pen.....
~Is the right side of the template up? There is a top and a bottom to the templates-the groove is "V" shaped, so be sure the wider part is facing up.
The only other thing I can suggest is to just gently guide the knife around, not force it...The students who seem to have the most difficulty are trying to force the knife, or holding it more "pencil-like" than straight up and down...
editted to add: If you are having trouble going in one direction, try going the other...sometimes it's just that there was already a nic there and you keep hitting it....

Pay close attention to the instructions included in the package. I found it helped to use removable Scotch tape to anchor the paper down to the cutting foam, and to hold the knife handle straight up and down, making sure the blade's "toe" (or pointed tip) is angled opposite from the direction I intend to drag the blade; otherwise the blade's "toe" just catches on the c/s and tears it up. Examine the blade closely, and you should see what I mean. Also check to make sure the "toe" hasn't broken off and is now flat and too dul to cut anything.
For those that say the blade is catching on the template, try using some sand paper to slip in between the channel, to sand down the nick so the blade will quit catching on it.

I know that SU sells the Coluzzle - do they sell the tag template? I'd love to be able to demo it!
Susan
SU! only currently sells the starter kit; not even the companion set any more . . . :( I want them to bring it back. It sold well for me every time I demo'd it.
I'd love for them to also carry the tag template, but then that would probably defeat the purpose of selling the tag die cuts. I doubt we'll see the tag template introduced this year in even a mini catalog. Mebbe next, if they hatchet the tag die cuts?????

Same reason I think we don't have any tag punches....then they'd have no need for the die cuts.....
now, maybe if we all wrote SU and asked.....
i wrote sooo many letters asking for square and circle punches that layer rather than the silly alpha squares and circles we once had. We really needed to get punches to compete with Creative Memories. Now all my CM customers are trading over because the whale tail punches are so much easier to use.
I'd rather be able to punch (or Coluzzle) my own tag in whatever paper I want than be limited to a ready made die cut....
For those that say the blade is catching on the template, try using some sand paper to slip in between the channel, to sand down the nick so the blade will quit catching on it.
This is an AWESOME tip.... some of my templates are thrashed from letting customers use them who didn't know what they were doing.....For some people it's difficult to grasp the thought of using very gentle pressure and the whole holding it straight up and down.... they think too much about using an exacto knife....
Anyway, I'm going to try using sandpaper to "clean" my templates back up.

When it comes to the Coluzzle system, GO WITH THE FLOW, in other words don't try to force it, let the cutter do the work. Just stick it into the channel, use the foamy sheet underneath (a must), hold the blade upright and gently pull. Don't try to cut it like an exacto knife. The blades have to be sharp, so replace often. This works great! I now love mine!
I just got a star and a heart tag template in the Mikes clearance isle!
Thanks Scrappiemommie for all your wonderful help! You're wonderful! I'll try these hints!!!

I love the new coluzzle tag template that has three different tag shapes and then one smaller tag inside of each. The smaller tag gives about 1/8" reveal when layered on the bigger tag. Perfect for layering. They are making a lot more templates that have the 1/8" size difference and are great for layering also. The tags are about 3" long. The set of three tags (in pairs) template was only about $7. I have used it quite a bit now.

whale tail
That's the style of punch mechanism. It has a large handle (that looks like a whale tail) that you push down to make the punch-out. It works much easier and smoother than the push button type punches.

I think I am going to get some tag templates. They have lots of options on each sheet and they are easy to store and cost about $5. They have lots of layers too.
I saw some in paper wishes catalog but I am going to Hobby Lobby on Friday and I hope they have some.
:p My friend and I bought a SIZZIX machine and some tag dies-they have several available. The machine is on sale through the end of July, I believe. 40% OFF! Check out the website, www.sizzix.com. Click on Specials for the coupon code. Lots of uses for Stampin' Up-ers!

Reason: Spell Check! It pays to proof-read...

Do you mean like the large "whale of a punch" type? Or the Paper Shaper's type?
