Lunchpail - How do you go around the handle & latch?
If I can find one of these, how do you neatly go around the handle and latches? Can you unscrew them and take them off, or are they welded on?
I really want to do these as a 2-part class (make the tin & dividers in January and make one card for every month in February), but not unless I know these can be done neatly & easily for beginners.
The boxes I have, I can not remove the hardware.
I did come up with a pretty good way around both the latch and the handles.
I traced them to save as a template to use on the other boxes I still need to do!
I will try to scan it in when I get the kids off to school in the morning!
I just cut mine as best I could and then used some decorative yarn around the edge to cover it up... but I love the template that mndnco gave us! I will try using it for sure!
I just ordered some at Oriental trading co for $4.95 each, pretty good price.
Did you find some with the lid opening from the top? When I looked there, all I saw was the whole side opening - that wouldnt work for a card organizer?
I have seen these at Oriental Trading and also www.ktcrafts.com is an Awesome website for paint cans, lunch pails, plain altoid tins (various sizes), etc....
Hi, I was wondering if any special type of adhesive should be used to secure the paper/fabric or ribbon to the tin lunch boxes? I would like to try one, but didn't know if anything special needed to be used to keep the paper secure. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks very much!
Sharon, I've used the red line tape on the 3 I've made and it worked great.
Also, the above template is pretty much how I did mine, but to make it easier I made two top pieces and had them meet in the middle. Then I ran ribbon across the top to hide the seam. Here's how it looked when done. For me this was a much easier way to do the top. I'm not too hot at cutting out holes in the middle of paper.
Hi girls,
I tried the lunch box tins, it was pretty easy , BUT I had a hard time getting the cut around the handles pieces. Any suggestions on how to get a better cut around the handle? Any suggestions would be sooooo... appreciated. Thanks, Mea
When I made mine the paper slid undereath the latch as far as the rivets, I then used ribbon around the top edge - that way you couldn't tell the paper didn't go all the way to the top.
I ordered the neatest acrylic templates from thecardladies.com. They have a template for the latch and a template for the top. Really neat. $4.00 + $2 for shipping and fast shipping. They are only for the provocraft lunch tins.

Now how do you fix the seams around the body of the tin? I want to see some pictures of this. I can't make it look pretty!
I paint the tops of mine so I am no help there. Here is a pic of the side seams on the last two I did. I don't do much to cover them, I don't think it's bad.
I made a template from copy paper around the latches and for the top. Be careful though because they are all a little bit different. To cut the holes I cut a slit in between the two with my paper cutter and put an embellishment over it after. I've sold a few and nobody has complained about the tops or sides. I do the side the same way Emily does. I adhere mine with modpodge. To be it feels more finished with it. Good luck! These are so much fun!
This is a purchased template, but very reasonable. thecardladies.com has 2 heavy acrylic templates, one for the latch and one for the handle hardware. They also send VERY clear instructions for using them AND $6 for both, including shipping!
I still need help. I see that many people use the sticky tape for the tins but when I did this, I ended up with loose paper in some areas because the tins are not exactly "square and totally flat". Does anyone understand what I am asking? I'm not sure that I am explaining well enough. Do you use tape on the back of the entire piece of paper or just along the edges? Thanks!!
I used sticky strip on my first tin also. Didn't like the results. I like to use Royal Coat by Plaid. It is a decoupage finish. It dries faster than regular Modge Podge. I use the Satin Finish. You can adhere the paper with it then also put a finish coat on if you like. You can apply it with the cheap foam brushes from Walmart. Hope this helps.
Hopefully I'm putting this in the right spot....help :(
I'm working on my first altered lunch tin today and I'm having trouble with the top of the tin. I'd like to cover it with this cute paper, but the template I downloaded doesn't seem to work. I have the ProvoCraft lunch tin that I got at a craft store. Can anyone help me out with some tips and tricks to get it done?
I'd be so grateful.
