I bought the large quantity of prismacolors that come in this great tin but the tin never closes right and is always falling off. I was wondering if other people had some good ideas about how to store and display their pencils.
If you have any pictures to show us, that would be so great.
I dealt with that tin for nearly 2 years and a few months ago I finally bought a pencil holder at Wal-mart that has 4 different sections to hold pencils and a center section with a little drawer. I think it cost $7 and I set it on my desk. BEST thing I've done towards organization in a long time! I use my Prismas all the time now because they're right there and easy to see the colors. It easily fits a 120 tin.
I made my own mega pencil holder. I bought lengths of PVC pipe, covered them with DP and hot glued them together. I wanted my color families seperate so it was easier to find the color I waned. Then I put the whole thing on one of those lazy susans made for cake decorating! It fits perfectly and I didn't have to worry about any kind of bottom for the PVC pipes. It cost about $2.00 for the pipe, and I had the lazy susan. It works for me!
I have alot of prismacolor pencils too. At JoAnns I purchased a divided clear hard plastic rectangular case that has 6 spaces. I also keep mine separated by color families. I have been thinking about using colored plastic cups that hang on a metal rod that I purchased from Ikea. But think I will use them for my markers, I have alot of waterbased markers by Tombo and also have 3 sets plus from SU. I saw this idea in the gallery 6-9 months ago. I'll link the photo if I can find it.
I have mine sorted by color family in an old tool-turnabout from Pampered Chef. Works fine for me! I like being able to see all the colors. Although that PVC idea sounds neat!
I had the tin of 72 and kept them in that for a while, but it was tucked away and I rarely used them. I just bought a $4 tin from Ikea, attached a magnet to the sharpener and keep them on my counter.
I had the same issue with the pencil tin. I found a square plastic container, Walmart, I think. Then, when Michael's had a sale, I purchased 9 of the smaller clear plastic boxes, taller rectangular shaped (near the tins and jewelry section at my local store). The boxes came with removable thin lids which I stored away. Then I tucked all the smaller rectangular plastic boxes in the large box. All my pencils are divided by color group and I even had a little room for my container of gamasol. Now when I need them, I just grab the basket and go. I guess you could do the same thing with pvc, just find a round container to store all the pvc pieces snugly, so they don't tip over. That was a big priority to me.
2nd thought...I store my copics in a portable silverware caddy. These are in abundance during the summer in all colors and sizes. They are usually divided into 3 sections on one side and the other side is one long space...but again, you could tuck in some of the Michael's clear boxes or other small holders.
Pack up a pencil or two and wander through a couple of your local stores...be open to inspiration and let us know what you decide to do. Good luck!

I like having mine close at hand as well and I liked the idea of a clear container however my cats love to craft with me so someone's tail **cough cleocatra cough** was always knocking everything over. I worried about broken glass so I decided on a clear recycled peanutbutter jar, the clear oval mayo containers work well too. I now have a metal mesh tray with 3" deep sides to keep all those clear containers on my desktop. Colored pencils , markers, gel pens, sharpies etc etc. The clear containers make it easy to tell at a glance what one to take out and no worries about broken glass.

This basically how I store all my pens/pencils. I had a couple small tin canister sets and they work perfect for this - sorry no pics of it.
I use the Pampered Chef tool turnabout--holds all my color families, plus regular pencils and pens and paintbrushes, plus all my scissors in the tallest middle divider.
Mine are sorted by very general color familes in metal pencil holders purchased at Office Depot. I have five of them and I've divided the color groups as follows:
Neutrals - blacks, browns, greys and whites
Blues
Greens
Reds, pinks and purples
Yellows and oranges
I still have mine in the tin :( I've been tempted to see if they would fit in a marker holder (the ones with an elastic for each marker) and put in the matching blender stump beside each.
Don't laugh but I have mine in a....dishwasher silverware holder. I lined the holder sections with paper so that the pencils don't get stuck in the little holes. It is the perfect size, plastic so not breakable when my cats decide to craft, lightweight, all connected so easily portable from my crafting room to another room in my home, and has 4 sections for me to sort by color family. love it!

Thanks very much for posting that, that's exactly what I've been wanting! I have 132 colors, if I bought a second case, I guess the mid sized blending stumps might be big enough to store in them.

Do you have a picture of this holder? That sounds like something I could use. I keep mine in my tin but I really hate having to pull out ALL my pencils to use them.
I found a small box at work that is a perfect fit for 9 toliet paper rolls.
Someday, I may cover the box and make it all fancy, but for now, it's just a cardboard box. With toliet paper rolls in it. And a bunch of pretty pencils.
It actually works perfectly for me because it takes up very little table space, but the pencils are still spaced out just enough that it's easy to find what I need.
