Default Decorative edge scissors or die?

About...5 years ago I bought a big batch of decorative edge scissors at Costco and then added a few misc ones....

I never seem to see anyone refer to them in their tool references in the galleries...and when I searched on them here I didnt get a hit.

Am I in the stone age with that or is anyone still using them?

Or have you dumped them for dies?

No dies for me......

I have a bunch of those decorative edge scissors and I use them from time to time.

My twin likes to use them when she scraps.

If you're in the stone age, then I'm right there with you :p

I've dumped all mine for a combo of dies and edge punches. I could NEVER cut a straight edge and always had wonky looking cuts. But I have to admit, they sure do look pretty all displayed with their different colored handles!

I have the mini pinking shears and the deckle edges ones that I still use. ( I have a bucket full of some others I could probably let go of) but, those two still get used.

and if you want a fun edge you can with most spellbinders shapes have a embossed edge so it gives you a line to follow with the scissors if you wanted to.

Oh! I forgot to mention edge punches! I have a couple of those but they take up so much room and are expensive!

I draw a straight line with a light pencil and cut that and then just erase.

Of course the scissors wont take the place of die and punches that do lace edges etc...

OMgoodness..I also still have the deckle ruler! Spritz with water and pull and tear.....anyone still have one of those?

I gave mine away because I could never cut more than an inch without ripping or getting the paper caught up in the blades. They just weren't sharp enough or something. I'm much happier with edge punches and dies.

Another partly in the stone age here, lol. I did at one time have a mass of them, but found some more trouble to get a decent edge with, than others,as poppydarling says. I gave a load away to my grandkids, and effectively just kept the ones I don't have as trimmer blades.

I have three that I've kept (scallop, "ladybug", and deckle). I use the scallop ones mostly for rounding corners where I need a smaller radius than my punches give...

I never did have very many but I rarely use the couple that I have no alternative tool for. I have a shallow scallop that I use once in awhile and invariably, try as I might, I still end up going up hill a bit and it isn't even... not a huge problem but still

I kept only 3 - pinking, scallop, and stamp edge. I rarely use them and if I gave them up I doubt I'd miss them as I use my dies.

I gave away most of mine but kept a few favorites that I use with small pieces of paper - to trim an edge or the bottom of a tag, small that I don't want to dig out a die or border punch.

My sweet hubby brought home the spinning thing that had bunches of decorative scissors in it probably 10 years go now. I finally gave it away a few months ago... I do not remember ever using them. It was time to let them go. I use dies, punches and Cameo now.

I have the Costco spinner full of those scissors, plus another bag of them. I have learned how to use them so they don't tear or miss cut. I hardly used them over the years. Getting a straight line was impossible unless I drew one on the paper to carefully folow.

If I used one to create a boarder around a square, the patterns would always be wonky at the corners. It required that my square size be dictated by the scissors to get the corners to look decent.

I should donate them to someone who is living off grid... along with the brass stencils...

Yeah that's true about corners..but for me it's the same with a punch. Dies are better.

Oh! Not your brass stencils Janet! They work like the plastic ones! They still have use!

I laughed out loud when I read this! OH NO JANET! Not that!!!

My brass stencils are the small ones. Some of them are tiny. I did buy some Dreamweaver putty stuff to fill them with... but I never use them any more. Guess I should take them out and play one day and if I can't get anything out of them, it's time to re-purpose.

I will see if I can drill a hole in them and make a wind chime out of them. I have a bunch of flower theamed ones, and some nature scenes. I can make a mobile, or garden art. They will develop a nice patina in the weather...

Sorry. That was a knee jerk reaction. Pastes are so popular now...I was thinking you could use those instead of what we used to use from Dreamweaver. (of which I have quite a bit)

That's a clever idea! I'd like to see pic if you go that route!

Love this thread, because it is reminding me to give some attention to some supplies I haven't used in a long time. I've gotten so nutty about not giving away supplies, because more than once, I've given something away, and then wanted to use it. The only exception is stamps that i have lovingly used many times or something I KNOW i would never use in a million years. I think I need to drag out my scissors one day!

Decorative edge scissors are what got me started in scrapbooking in 1998. I saw some at M's and had to find a reason to own them and use them. My stash is now down to about 10 faves and I still use them.

I don't want a die cut machine so I use my border punches and edge scissors. BUT, I also have a deckle ruler I bought from Goodwill and did not know about spritzing with water first! No wonder it never worked that well! LOL! Thanks for the tutorial.

Have a few fancy scissors but they don't often see daylight, just very occasionally. Dies and punches are what I pull out most often.

I had a bunch (about 30) decorative sissors, but that was before the die's came out. I worked at a school and donated them to a special needs classroom. They were so happy to get them. If you do not think you are never going to use them again and know of no one who could use them, please donate to your local school.

I am a teacher. I love the scissors for quick things. When I have more time I like to use the dies or Cricut.

I still have four decorative scissors in my craft arsenal: tiny pinking, postage stamp edge, small scallops and deckle edge. Just two days ago I used the tiny pinking scissors to trim the top part of the little brown paper bags I am making for Halloween. I just couldn't find the right size bags at a cost that was reasonable so I made them. Sometimes I like to decorate my envelopes with faux postage stamps, hence the postage stamp edge scissors. I use the deckle edge scissors to trim around an image that I use as a sticker for the envelope flap (I think I could live without the deckle scissors, though). Occasionally, I use the scallop scissors for the bottom of tags or the tops of bags for a sweet little edge. So, I don't use them a lot but I do use them.

Something I have too many of and rarely use are some hand punches (like the kind you get at a stationary store for punching holes). I use the ones for holes but I also have an itty-bitty star, a tear drop/petal, a flower and a couple that look like rectangular slots (I have no idea why I bought any of them, other than the ones for holes, lol, early days I guess).

I guess I do use the flower punch as I found a recent card I made that uses it. Here's the card if you'd like to take a look. I guess I'll have to keep that punch

I still have several. I did have more, but got rid of them. I don't use them often, but the one that gets the most work is my deckle scissors. I like to cut leaves with them to make the leaves more realistic. Here are some samples:

Melody - thanks for the nudge to pull out my crimper, too! I knew about the fold-it-and-crimp-it thing for leaves, but I forgot! And you're right - the deckle edge makes a big difference...

Wow. I'm glad I still have these scissors now. I just didn't think of the many ways I could use them. Cutting the edges of leaves is a great idea. So is cutting small items like a tag or embellishment. These items are too small to make me bother setting up the Cameo to deal with it.

That tear drop punch - rain drops! I will have to go look for that. LOL

Okay ... as long as we're confessing a bit here, I'm raising my hand with y'all.
Yep ... I have a gallon-sized zippy bag of a variety of these scissors. The only way I was ever happy with results was when I used a ruler & pencil along the back side of whatever was being cut unless it was a "shaped" item. My biggest issue other than straight lines was "those corners" never ever matched nicely. Thus, that bag was/is more like a "permanent" holding cell for the scissors unless Grands elect to use them. Still ... you know that Fiskars and others made a nice dividend on these until dies swept across our stampy-scrappy lives. ;)

Got rid of all the edged scissors a long time ago...have weaned out my punches a couple of times, need to do it again. Still have a few of the edge punches I use fairly regularly...paw prints, a birthday party one...a few of Martha's that I love, way more SU than I probably need, but I still go to the standard shaped ones a lot.

I have a Cameo and a Big Shot Plus. But sometimes I want to cut words I stamped and none of my dies are the right size for the space I have on the card. So that is when I use my decorative scissors. I can cut to the desired shape and still have a fancy edge.

I still have a boxful that I use often. Mostly the pinking, cloud, scallop, postage, wave and most especially the deckle are the ones I use (but I have others!). I am actually on my second deckle scissors, as I wore out the first pair! I also have a pair that cut 2 different corner shapes that I love. Actually it makes 4 shapes, depending on which way you hold the scissors and how far in you slide the corner of your card. Love it.

I had that set, but donated most to a primary teacher for classroom art projects, and kept only a few. It's surprising how often they come in handy even though I have dies and punches galore. Maybe it is because I can sort through 5 pairs of scissors faster than folders of dies and boxes of punches!

Cindy H-I have that hand punch with the slot too...I use it for ribbons. Lies flatter than round holes.

Melody-what a great idea with the deckle scissors for the leaves! Those cards are beautiful and the leaves are way cool!

It would be true that my scissors are easier to grab if they werent on a top shelf...they need to live lower.

Yep I have a full set, I am not sure I have ever used them... but I might ...some day.... along with the deckled rulers, crimpers, faux stitching embossing wheel, and those templates that you used the same way as deckle rulers, but were for matting and layering...

Aha! So that's what it's used for! Thanks wavejumper, I knew there must have been a good reason to buy it

I still have every single pair I ever bought even the duplicates. The carousel is in my craft room on a shelf visible from my desk. Another carousel is on my granddaughters craft desk so she has easy access when she needs them and then I have a handful of duplicates at my summer home in case I want a decorative edge. I agree you don't get a straight line if you just go at it and cut but it's pretty straight if you put a light pencil line as a guide. I also have 2 of the metal rulers that I still use every once in a while. Though I use punchs and dies more often, you never know when your going to want something a little different and the sissors are quite handy for that.

I still have a good amount of them. I agree about making the light pencil line to follow! It would be quicker than dragging out dies and such. Simple is good! Plus, if you're on a budget, they are cheaper and can probably be found at thrift stores, yard sales etc...

Another way to keep your edge pretty straight is to just cut close to the edge of your paper, only cutting off about 1/8" all along the edge.
