What can I use instead of the SU window sheets to do shaker cards? I looked at transparency sheets at Office Max but at $40 a box I want to make sure they are the right thing to use. Any ideas?

I've used transparencies before if I'm out of window sheets. They're not as sturdy as window sheets, but they'll work! I think I got mine at wall mart and they weren't that expensive...it was a smaller package, but that way you could see if you like them.
There are two types of transparencies. The write on transparencies are much cheeper than the ones that work in ink jet printers. Based on the price you stated in your post you probably were looking at the printer version. The write on version is in a different section at our office store, so you might want to check there again if you get a chance.

Too impatient for window sheets
I use small plastic zip lock bags for my gel cards, and the small cellophane bags from SU for my shaker cards. Then I can just fill and go. I just tape them to the cardstock and they work great.
I use the window sheets for my 'see through' cards and for reflection techniquest etc. I have used transparencies as well from the office supply store. The ones I bought were a little thicker so they worked better for the 'see through' cards.
Take a good look at the packages of embellishments/stencils, etc. Sometimes they have a sheet of acetate over the product. I save them for use in cards, etc.
I use those old-fashioned plastic paper protectors - the ones that accomodate 3-hole punched paper and have the black construction paper insert in them. They are very cheap and work just fine for me.

I like to buy the sheets that can go through a copier. You can heat emboss on those. They also make sheets that can go through your printer. They have a special coating on one side that takes ink very well. So just figure out what you're planning on doing with them and buy the ones that fit your needs. A small package goes a long way!

Being a very part-time stamper and being "frugal", I didn't want to spend a lot of money on transparencies nor did I want 100 (I found they were so expensive too!). I went to the copy center at Staples (Office Max has them too) and asked them if they'd sell me a couple of sheets. They did! I think they sold my 5 sheets for something like .50-$1.00 total... They were really nice about it and asked me what uses I'd be using them for so they'd sell me the correct type for my project. Good luck!
