Supplies

  • Derwent Inktense Pencils or crayons

  • 3D Embossing Folder

  • Clear Wax Crayon

  • Acrylic Paint

  • Paper Towels or Baby Whites

Step-by-Step

  1. Step 1

Prep an embossed piece of watercolor paper by roughly coloring with a medium that is permanent/not water soluble when dry, like Derwent Inktense. 3D embossing folders work best for this technique.

  2. Step 2

Activate the color on the panel by painting it with water, until the desired amount of color is achieved. Add more coloring medium if necessary and allow to dry completely or dry with a heat gun.

  3. Step 3

When dry, use a clear wax crayon held parallel to the card panel to rub wax onto the raised areas of the design.

  4. Step 4

Use a brush to apply acrylic paint all over the panel. Thin with water if necessary. Do not let it dry before moving to the next step.

  5. Step 5

Using a damp paper towel or baby wipe, remove the wet paint from all the raised areas of the design, being careful to avoid removing paint from the lower areas.

  6. Step 6

The raised resist areas will show the brighter trapped color and pop out from the areas covered with paint.

  7. Step 7

Finish the card. For a fun variation, try dark acrylic paint instead of white.

Another winner, Lydia! Love this technique! Is there a substitute to the Derwent Inktense? I don't have them in my stash and would love to give this a go! Results are stunning!

@jmhoffman - anything that isn't re-activated by water - so alcohol markers would work, for example. Anything that is reactivated will mix with the paint - which might be fun, but I was looking for that fresco effect with the white toning down the color.
