Faux Mother of Pearl

by Beate Johns

Use Pearl Acrylic Paint to create a shimmery resist background.

Supplies

  • Metallic Pearl Acrylic Paint Dabber™, or Pearl Lumiere™
  • White Cardstock
  • Saran Wrap™
  • Craft Sheet, or old CD or paper plate
  • Jet Black Archival Ink , or Black Stazon™
  • Light colored dye ink , either light pink, very light off white or light blue
  • Blending Tool
  • Water Mister
  • Cotton Rag
  • Stamps, JustRite Stampers' Plant a little love used here
  • Ink Pad Re-Inker and Brush (optional)

Step-by-Step

  1. Step 1

Add a small amount of Pearl Acrylic Paint on your Craft Sheet.

    Variation:
You can use Lumiere instead of the Paint Dabber. If you don't own a craft sheet, add paint on a plastic sheet of old CD.

  2. Step 2

Bunch up your Saran Wrap™ and dip it into your Pearl Acrylic Paint.

  3. Dab off excess paint.

  4. Step 3

Start tapping your Saran Wrap™ lightly on your white cardstock to transfer paint.

  5. Continue to ink up your Saran Wrap™ and transfer the paint until your piece of cardstock is covered. Make sure you leave some areas uncovered.

    Let paint dry.

  6. Step 4

Start adding your light colored ink with your blending tool.

    Variation:
If you are using glossy cardstock as your base, you can also use a brayer to apply the ink.

  7. Cover your entire piece of cardstock with ink.

  8. Step 5

Mist your cotton rag slightly with water and use it to burnish your cardstock. The ink over the acrylic paint will come off. This will create your faux Mother of Pearl look.

  9. Step 6

Stamp your image on your background with Archival black ink.

  10. Step 7 (Optional)

If you want to add color to your image, apply it now.

  11. Make sure you use dye Re-inker and let your image dry.

  12. Step 8

Wipe over the image with your wet rag to remove ink that is over your acrylic paint.

  13. Your image is done.

  14. Step 9

    Finish your project.
