Crafting with Newspaper

Learn an easy mixed media technique using newspaper.

  • Newspaper

  • High Quality Glue Stick

  • Gesso

  • Acrylic Markers

  • Stickers

  • Dies

Step-by-Step

  1. Step 1

    Using a high quality glue stick, adhere newspaper to cardstock.

  2. Step 2

    Apply gesso to the card panels in a thin layer so you can still see the text or images.

  3. Step 3

    Splatter the panel with an acrylic marker.

  4. Use the marker to add marks if desired.

  5. Step 4

    Finish the card

It's important to note that newspaper is highly acidic and will, over time, transfer that acid to whatever it's touching. I'd personally recommend using a copy printed on acid-free paper (you could take a photo and then print the digital image, or print a color copy). A digital copy can be great--you can reuse it over and over when all you want is the look of newspaper rather than the subject of the specific article. Also--don't laminate newspaper--it seals the acid inside and destroys the newspaper that much sooner--it will still darken and fall apart.
OK--my master's degree in museum studies meant that I had to say this. I'll get off my preservation soapbox now.
