Any Size Envelope

by Nancy Stislow

Learn how to create an envelope for any size card.

Supplies

  • Scoring Tool
  • Paper trimmer or knife, ruler and cutting mat
  • Corner rounder
  • Adhesive - double sided tape or glue
  • Scissors
  • Cardstock (double-sided cardstock and designer paper work beautifully for this)
  • Finished card

Step-by-Step

  1. Step 1

Check the length of the paper for correct size by flipping the finished card twice over the cardstock. Leave about 2" extra. No need to be exact. Trim excess if necessary.

  2. Step 2

Rotate the cardstock leaving the card in place. Lay the card approximately 1" from the side.

  3. Step 3

Trim the opposite side so that there is 1" of cardstock on either side of the card.

  4. Step 4

Lay the paper with the card on scoring board so that the card is centered at the top of the board. Score1/8" away from both edges of the card.

    Note:
Black lines show score lines used here.

  5. Step 5

Rotate the cardstock with the card in place on the scoring board to score the flaps. Slide the card up to the top of the scoring board. Score one notch 1/8" away from both edges of the card.

  6. Step 6

The cardstock should now have four score lines.

  7. Step 7

Cut out the four corners as shown.

  8. Step 8

Round 4 corners of the cardstock.

  9. Fold the flaps down and round the 4 remaining corners.

  10. Step 9

Apply adhesive to the lower flap.

  11. Step 10

Finished! Embellish your envelope if desired.

    Hint:
This works with any size card. However if the card is 5x5 or greater, a larger paper must be used- even a grocery bag, heavy weight gift wrap or legal paper.

Variations

  1. For the math wiz:
    - To figure out the length of paper needed the short side of card multiply it by 2 and add 2". (short card size x 2 + 2" = paper length).
    - Measure the long side of the card and add 2". ( long side + 2" = paper width).
    - Score at 7/8" on each side of the paper width.
    - To figure out where to score on the long side of the paper, subtract the short side of card from the paper length, divide by 2 and subract 1/8". ((paper length - short side of card) / 2) - 1/8" = where to score each side of the long side of paper.

I personally found the directions about add 2 in. to lenght of card etc. much easier to understand than the directions about flipping card over twice etc.

Thanks for the tutorial.

Thanks so much for this tutorial! I have an envelope template but it's only for one specific size and I honestly can't figure out how to make my envelpes using my M.S. score board, so this is definitely going to come in handy!! Thanks again.

Where do I find that rolled adhesive you used in the video? It appears you just tore it and didn't need to cut like the red tape. What is it called?

Thank you for the tutorial. ALSO, thank you for including the 'geek' formula! I'm not the best math wizard, but I understand this 'formula' easily and wrote it down on my index card!

I do have a question though regarding the 'sealing' of the personally made envelopes. What would you use on the 'sealing' part if you were to make up cards/envelopes and give them as a gift to someone?

In other words, I like to give away my cards in sets with envelopes, but I'm at a loss on how the recipient would seal the card to give it to someone. Any ideas so the envelope can be 'glued' closed at a later date? Thanks.

Val,
The tape I used in the tutorial (and that I use for all my projects) is Scor-Tape. Type that into your google engine and you will find a lot of stores that carry it. Or purchase it from the Scor-Pal website.

Jann,
How about using Scor-Tape for the envelope closing. Leave the tape paper on it and give it away. The recipient only has to pull away the cover to close the envelope.

Hugs and smiles

Thank you for this video...lot more helpful than others I have seen or tried.

Val, I used an ATG gun 700, the larger one that holds 1/2 inch tape. Scor Tape works well too.
I have mostly used PVC glue and have had no problems with envelopes coming unglued.

Jann, I didn't have Scor Tape on hand so I have often used double sided tape too found in most general stores.
Thank You
Nancy

Tiffany,
The squares work the same way. If the square is bigger than 5 inches you will need something larger than scrapbook paper to use this method. An office supply store sells legal sized paper which works fine.
Thanks for asking.

Thanks for the great tutorial. I have a die cut for making envelopes for the the standard 4 1/4 x 5 1/2card but this will be very helpful when I want to make square cards.
