Our Artist in Residence answers your questions
Q: Barbara wants to know: "My two favorite watercolor artists turn out spectacular projects but one uses Hot Press watercolor paper and the other uses Cold Press. I would love to know how to choose watercolor paper. "
A: I use both! To remember the difference between the two papers, think of "hot press" like an iron - a hot press is used to give this paper a smooth finish. With very little texture, hot press paper is great for stamping, stenciling, and ink blending techniques. Cold press and rough watercolor papers will reveal their textures when watercolor media is applied, and I especially like them with paints that have some 'granulation' (sediment in the paint that sinks or separates as the paint dries) as the texture really holds that color variation well. If you're able to find some samples of each type of paper and experiment, that's always best. With either paper type, a heavier weight (at least 140#) will give best results and resist warping.
Feedback From Past Tutorials
Peggy is excited about the Chipboard Bookmark tutorial: "These would make great incentives for teachers to give their students to encourage them to read! And a great little thinking of you gift! Wonderful for church bazaars! I can already see that I am going to be making a ton of these!"
