This tag has already flown away and on its way to its final destination. Gosh I had fun making it and I also had lots of time.
A dear friend on this site, Nancy (NWilliams6) and I share a love of trying out new techniques and mixed media. We had been chatting about trying out a new technique on a YouTube video that we came across.
Nancy came up with a brilliant idea of us choosing a video and using it as inspiration for us both to create a project. Nancy chose two videos, one by Maremi Smallart and one by Gabrielle Pollacco, both of whom I already follow.
One was using lots of layers and the other was to create a folded skirt. I'm not one to usually shy away from a challenge and especially one on techniques I love, so I was in. I also had to create something for the S2S layer challenge and will put this against that too.
This is my take. I opted for making a tag. I also wanted to use one of my new Julie Nutting stamps and making a skirt for this doll was fun.
The BG was made first using texture paste and 2 stencils. I started by spraying inks but I couldn't quite get the control I wanted and my inks aren't spraying well, so I opted for my Magicals. I'd seen a video where the powders were dropped onto the project and water sprayed. These made it easier to control my colour, plus they are very sparkly and I love shine. There's lots of layers on the tag and there was lots of drying in between colours.
Cotton twine twirled and plonked on the top using clear gesso to hold it in place. More ink plonking and dabbing. Once the BG was done next were the chipboards.
I have lots of chipboards but chose one lace flourish that I cut in half. Gesso added, then colour. In the end I opted for gold using paints and then added red and blue sparkle medium rubbing it onto the chipboard pieces. The bird cage and bird also painted gold. A wooden butterfly was also painted using my leftover Lindy's Magicals and butterflies die cut out of scraps.
Onto my doll...I love these and I'm sure I'm finding my 10 year old self again. After stamping and fussy cutting she needed a new skirt. I chose this pretty patterned paper as I wanted the bottom to be fluted and used the edge of another die to get the effect.
Now the fun part...those pleats. I'd had a go at doing these once before and they didn't work so well but this time I was determined to get them right. Everything was going ok but gosh they are tricky. The secret is to slightly dampen your paper, except I had a spot a little too damp. I managed to retrieve it...phew and it's now covered up.
Top, shoes and hair coloured. Every girl needs sparkle so wink of Stella added on her legs and shoes and anywhere else I thought she needed it lol. It was at this stage I thought an underskirt would look cool and had out some cheesecloth. Edged it in gold and added under her skirt.
She was starting to come together when I spotted a piece of twine I had not used which I'd had out a couple of weeks ago when practicing a reef knot for another project. Plonked it on my skirt and thought perfect belt. Now to get this pleated skirt and belt onto my doll. I'd seen somewhere where a flower had been used as a dress and my doll had a bare bit where my skirt and her top didn't quite meet....that's when I got out my flowers, cut one in half and made it fit on the top of the skirt. Amazing how things can come in handy at the right moment and save a girl's modesty. Finally liquid pearls added and her headband stamped, fussy cut and coloured.
Back to the tag. Twine twirled around lots and now for the fun part...start layering...chipboards, flowers, Die cut butterflies. Shame the top chipboard is covered up as it's so pretty but that's another story. Ribbon added.
My doll added and I thought I was done but I had no sentiment and I didn't want to put something on that would cover up all the shine and beautiful colour. It's so shiny IRL. That's when I thought of my TH stickers and these were so right for so many reasons.
The back of the tag was covered with a piece of paper and a message to its recipient.
Thank you Nancy for the challenge. I can't wait to see what you come up with and I'm sure it will be amazing. I had such fun and am happy that you inspired me to have a go.
Can't wait for our next MM project.
TFL. Happy day

Jayne, this tag is a delight! Love all those layers and the pretty colors. You've got a marvelous bg for your pretty paper doll. Her skirt is lovely and the cheesecloth petticoat the perfect touch. You are a whiz with multi media!

How did I miss this!!!!!!! I nearly fainted when I opened the envelope (parcel!) and came face to face with this drop dead gorgeous, super duper, fanatstical creation. Jayne it is even more special in real life. It is great reading this description then looking at it in the flesh. Thank you my west coast Aussie mate, I can't wait to show my craft girlfriends. We are all Julie Nutting fans.

Jayne, I love this tag. Such a wonderful colour combo. I just love blues and purples together, especially when they blend into each other. I lovevthe dimension, with the flowers, butterflies and skirt, and that gold corner is cool. I also am pinning it. I have a pinterest folder just for tags.

Jayne this a marvelous piece of messy joyfulness. I can’t believe you could part with it but when I read it was Susie who was the lucky recipient, it could not have gone to a better home. Your process notes are amazing. So many little steps but the magic is in your sense of color and meticulous placement of all the perfect elements. A perfect doll.
