brendaruse - no masking required at all! Love that!! These stamps are designed to work with each other, and it really does work great.
As for the shading, I used the "Tonal Applicator," which is a stamp that looks like a big pear with tons of teeny little dots in it. I inked it up with Bashful Blue first, and tap tap tapped repeatedly. I had to reink the stamp several times. Then I used Brocade Blue and tap tap tapped it into the Bashful Blue, over and over until I got the coverage I wanted.
It's best to work on glossy paper so that you have time for your inks to blend. Thanks for the great comments, everyone! :-)
