This is for Robin's fun "Southwestern" challenge. I have taken my inspiration from the colour palette of the southwest and two of Polly's recent challenges.
When I do extra messy and watery mixed media backgrounds, I do a full A4 sheet of cardstock and keep the left overs in my stash, in this case I used 4 glossy photo cards 4"x 6". The glossy card was dunked in a big puddle of mermaid lagoon Distress spray stain. I added some turquoise Dylusions spray to freshen up the puddle of ink when I dunked the last 2 pieces of glossy card.
To add texture to the panels, I flipped the flower stencil and smooched it into the card and I also cleaned the spatula that had remains of gesso and ink on it. As stand alone panels, neither of these would have looked good as cards, but I loved the colours and texture and thought I could die-cut some feathers.
Robins fun challenge is perfect opportunity to use the two left over panels and make a journal page.
I stamped this lovely Unity image (she is legless, just a top half) onto a large sheet of scrap paper and drew a long skirt in order to make a template. Then the challenge was to make the skirt using the 2 glossy card panels. The messy textured pattern on the glossy card didn't look right with straight cut edges, and then I remembered Polly's recent technique of tearing edges. Voila...thank's Pol!
I coloured Esmerelda with Prismacolour pencils, then highlighted her hair and blouse with Copics. Her skin was also done with pencils, then I gently wiped a foam blending tool with leftover walnut stain distress ink, then added a bit more pencil.
Thank you for looking and I hope you get a change to get inky and join us.

Wow, fabulous work Susie! The way you've melded her with the skirt is so perfect. And the black background makes those southwestern classic colours just sing.

I'm just sitting here staring and drooling over this beauty. WOW! I also so enjoyed your description of how that background was made and I think tearing the skirt was pure genius. I'm going to scroll back up and stare some more...

This is just perfect - wonderful southwest colors and the dress you designed would appeal to most young Mexican/Indian women. Absolutely wonderful way to utilize your left over panels.

Wow! Way to let your fashion designer self out of the box! You really blew the lid off this challenge and probably a couple of others! The mixed media dress is so fantastic. If it were real you would have a few of us fighting over it!

Oh WOW Susie - just looking at all the lovely splashes of colour on this wonderful creation. To me it looks she is wrapped in a very rich embroidered brocade - just fabulous. One of these days I am going to get to sit and watch you create something like this. Its just wonderful.
