I used to use this template to make my kimonos:
http://www.hardin.k12.ky.us/japan/orig_kimono.htm, and it still works! Over time I have played with the dimensions, though, as I wanted the collar to be longer (so you have to make it wider to start with), and I wanted it longer, too. I think the body is 3" x 6" (the origami washi paper is 6x6).
Then, I met a woman at a craft show I did last winter who makes really cool pins out of these things, and she showed me how to cheat. So now I just make the body of the kimono by following the template, and I make the sleeves separately and just tape them to the back. Is that cool or what?
Start with a piece of patterened scrap paper and play with it a while. PM me if you get stuck.
