I covered a file folder with paper. I folded the end up to make the inside pocket. Used ribbon to tie it shut. The I added a variety of cards. They were a gift.
They were easy to do except the folds can get too thick with all the paper.
Hi Tracy,
First of all, thanks so much for asking me I was pretty proud of those holders.
I used a regular file folder. Try to not use one that is too thick. With all the paper it can get hard to make the bends.
I opened it up so that the width was the long part (about 18 in) like a book. The bend is going up and down then. With the bend up and down the file folder does not close evenly. So, I made another bend so that the file folder closes with both sides together and it gives it a small spine (about 1/4 inch). This gives it room to hold the cards on the inside when it is closed. I then folded the bottom up about 3 1/2 - 4 inches. Make sure the fold is really creased.
I then covered it with a pattern paper inside and out. I did make a mistake with too much overlapping paper and it was too thick on the foldsand I had to fix a gap.Test your folds on the spine to make sure when you close it there is enough paper. The other thing I wouls do this time vs. last time is cover the outside first and overlap it to the inside (like covering a book) and have the inside paper come almost ot the top of the overlap from the front.
After I got it all covered I folded the bottom up (that is why you want a really good crease before you cover it). I used a sticky strip type tape on the sides to hold the bottom flap in palce. You could staple it and cover the staples too. I added paper trim to the top on the outside and lace on the bottom.
I used heavy grommets for the ribbon string to close it. I have a grommet setter from Joann's it is in the tool section near the fabric. They are pretty cheap if you have a coupon. It was too thick for a regular eyelet setter.
You can decorate the front however you like. I made these for my aunts and they send a lot of cards so I made a variety of cards for the inside. Birthday, thinking of you, sympathy, get well etc.
I hope this makes sense. You can always send me an email [email protected]
I think that is it if I think of anythng else I will let you know.
Have fun!
