For the themed SB challenge I chose my story about my family's history of blackeye peas.
Here is a copy of the text, too small to read in the photo: My family tradition of eating blackeye peas has been something I have continued throughout my life. As far back as I can remember, my Mama Ruby cooked blackeye peas and hog jawl to ring in the new year. I am not sure if she really believed in the superstitions or if she practiced them for fun, but I chose to keep this tradition.
The tradition of eating blackeye peas on New Years day is a Southern one. It was told to me that eating these peas would bring you good fortune – and everyone who entered your home – during the coming year. Everyone who visited us was warmly offered a bowl, or at least requested to try a spoonful for their good luck.
The best way to eat these delishious peas is straight out of the pot with diced sweet onion and a few shakes of Tabasco sauce. If it is to be part of a meal, just pile a laddle on top of a plate of hot white rice. That will fill you up. My grandmother cooked collards too. That accompinament did not survive my ritual. Collards were not part of the good fortune guarentee and not part of my menu.
An interesting bit of trivia is that the tasty Southern fare appearted in a song. Remember it? In Bobbie Gentry's 1967 captivating street ballad “Ode To Billie Joe”: Papa said to Mama as he passed around the blackeyed peas, "Well, Billy Joe never had a lick of sense; pass the biscuits please."
Cornbread is a popular accompliment to blackeye peas. Mama Ruby probably served it. Actually, she made biscuits or cornbread from scratch for every supper. There were very few occassions where store-bought dinner rolls were served. I wuld cook cornbread too, but no one in my family eats it. I sure donÂ’t need to either! But I love those blackeye peas!

Yup, my Momma always wanted me to eat 'just one' but I'm not a big fan of them...still do it for her though! ;)
