Yesterday I learned from a thread by Mommydouglas and then her kindly pm'ing me that Christmas crackers are part of a British Christmas dinner table tradition. When the cracker is pulled by two people each holding one end of the twisted paper, the friction creates a small explosive 'pop' produced by a narrow strip of chemically impregnated paper. The cardboard tube tumbles a bright paper hat, a small gift and a joke belong to whoever has the biggest part of the cracker. Apparently Exclusive crackers are made for members of the Royal Family still. Not sure why my camera has made the card black It is actually the same green color as the tree, thought it would look better in the daylight but no such luck.
