If I remember right, the person to credit for the ribbon trick is Denise Schwartz. She brought a super cute Mixed Bouquet shoebox swap that used this to one of my upline's meetings.
To tie the ribbon: Just use a (rectangle) punch on either side of the message. Thread the ribbon from the front to the back at the left hole, back to the front at the right hole, around the right edge to the back again and back through the left hole to the front. Now you should have both ends of the ribbon sticking out of the front of the left hole so that you can tie a knot or a bow.
