Here's the journalling for the first page of the Travel Album I decided to start becuase of some of the VSBN challenges. "Upon arriving at the Youth Hostel in the old walled part of Quebec late in the afternoon we went out to find a place for dinner before even checking out the tourist brochures. Walking back to the Hostel, we noticed that there were people stopping to sit along the curbs, seemingly waiting for something. Having not read much tourist literature and not being able to speak the language fluently, we decided to just sit and wait for what would happen. More and more people gathered so we knew some big event was imminent. We later discovered that by pure chance weÂ’d arrived in Quebec City during the one week in which they celebrate the arrival of the French to the area. That evening we witnessed a parade of people dressed up in period costumes, performers from the time and effigies. The effigies carried down the street were amazing to watch. One personÂ’s job was to walk along the street in front, just to scout out the terrain and to let the carrier know what to avoid and when to stop. This is the only event in North America that still uses effigies of this magnitude. We purchased these commemorative effigy medallions to gain access to the fair which included entertainment, rides, games and market booths typical of the time. The effigy trading cards packaged with the medallions became the currency required to participate in the games and rides. Booths sold food typical of the times, corn on the cob, berries and grilled meats, but at current day prices."
