Rembrandt is my favorite artist, but it was quite intimidating to think of making a card that would even resemble his beautiful work. So...I found a line drawing of one of his nativity sets (done by Rembrandt). See the printed line drawing in the bottom left corner. That is what I colored.
Jesus is the focal point of the painting, so I colored his wraps with a white chalk marker. Then I started coloring in the center with light earthy colors and spread out from there going to darker earthy colors. When I was finished with my rough coloring (markers), I used blending brushes to highlight the focal point with Daffodil Delight, gradually adding darker colors to the edge. While the coloring was still not dry, I added some gold EP for patina around the edges.
The sentiment doesn't show up very well in the photo, but it is gold embossed in the bottom right corner. It says *The Light of the World*.
It was very hard to photograph. The camera kept focusing on the gold, so you don't see the rich color very well. This is one that looks better IRL.
I'm no Rembrandt, but it was fun to play. Reminded me of a quote I saw earlier today: Practice any art...no matter how well or badly, not to get money or fame, but to experience becoming...to make your soul grow. --Kurt Vonnegut
Thanks for the challenge. It was fun to experience becoming!

Rembrandt's focus was always on light, and your card sure focuses on what is important!! Lovely!

I love the way you made your contrast of light and dark on this card. Love it.

I think you did well to illustrate how Rembrandt used light in his paintings. By the way, I love his drawings, too. What a lovely Christmas card. Thanks for sharing the Vonnegut quote...
