This card was made for a challenge that wanted us to use the theme "Warm & Cozy - Layer Up". When each of my three granddaughters were born I made a quilt that was unique for each one. The challenge theme made me remember how cute the quilts were and what a joy it was to wrap each little baby girl in them for the first time. Definitely a "warm & cozy" feeling for both of us!
Since I was starting from scratch, I turned to my ScanNCut digital cutting machine and its Canvas Workspace design software to create the hexagons and the quilt body itself. I made a simple rounded rectangle that was 5-1/4"x 4" in size for the quilt base, then 17 7/8"x3/4" hexagon shapes that I cut out of the quilt base. I wanted the hexagon quilt patterns to be "stacked" in side each quilt opening, so I cut an additional 51 hexagons to allow me to glue two each behind each stamped hexagon piece for use in a later step. Using the Canvas Workspace software, I created the pink "bias tape" that went around the quilt edge by using a 0.08" inset border and cutting it from the SU Flirty Flamingo cardstock.
Using my Stampin' Up! (SU) Stamparatus stamp positioner, I placed the blank white hexagons inside so I could ink and stamp all six individual patterns from the SU "Six-Sided Sampler" stamp set at once. I did this with each of four colors (pink, yellow, blue and green) so I had a good assortment of colors and patterns to lay out the hexagon patterns in a pleasing arrangement for the quilt.
Next came the "quilting" step. I ran the white quilt base through my embossing machine inside the "zig-zag" embossing folder, then each of the stamped hexagons through using the SU "Lattice" folder.
Then the assembly steps began. The pink border was glued onto the quilt base, the the base was glued onto a standard A2 card base. I glued two blank hexagons on the back of each stamped hexagon. Then glued each hexagon stack into its quilt hexagon opening.
The final step was to create the sentiment piece. I wanted to continue the hexagon theme, so stamped the sentiment from the SU "A Grand Kid" set using the same pink ink as used for the hexagons. I then used the SU "Stitched Nested Labels" dies to center and sentiment in the die. After cutting it out, I used the same die, but moved it up from the bottom of the sentiment die cut, and did a partial cut to get rid of extra white space below the sentiment, and to add an interesting stitching. I hand trimmed along the stitching of the original die cut to remove it so that the white piece would be smaller and easily fit inside a pink matting that I die cut using the same die as was used for the white piece. If I had used the next size up die, it would have been way to large and hide too many of the hexagons, hence the trimming of the white piece to keep the element smaller.
I like how cozy the quilt came out, and the overall feel of the card. I am rating the difficulty level as a "4" out of a possible "5" because I had to start from scratch to create the quilt and all its hexagon pieces.
