What a fun site Susan has introduced us to! I went back and forth between 3-4 authors before choosing John Steinbeck. I think I've read most of his books and they've had great influence on me. My favorites are The Grapes of Wrath, East of Eden, and Of Mice and Men. My card is based on the first one. I altered two playing cards by painting them with gesso, then stamping with various bg stamps, and sewing around the edges. I also added some distress glaze for added texture. The truck image reminded me of the Joad family making their way from OK to CA. The bg was made by gluing many pieces of old books and then applying gesso mixed with reinker. I added some distressed cardboard on alternate corners. The quote is actually from another book but I thought it worked here. I really had fun putting this together. Thanks Susan for the wonderful challenge.

What an amazing tribute to a beloved author! Don’t you think anyone would be profoundly moved to know their thoughts arranged just so could influence generations? The first thing my eyes focused on was the quote. And I felt convicted.
I adore all the details, Pol! The next thing I had to see multiple times was the truck...all your elements blend in the dry rusted out landscape of the beginning of the book. Yes, pausing to ponder. The corrugated paper board reminds me of using it for siding, insulation, and coarse shoes. Hope was West.
As someone who chose West, I say yes new life! Thank you for bringing Steinbeck to the tea party.

Grapes of Wrath is an amazing story........and totally unforgetable! The truck is just what I imagined full of the Joads. This card is fabulous, Polly!, and the quote, even not from the book, is perfect!!

Wow Polly. Not only have you created a fantastic collage but you have inspired many people here to think about that story; about how your card relates to the story; about repurposing; and, about life. Just like the author you are honoring, your work is influencing us in profound ways. I am always in awe of collages and this one is definitely AWESOME.
