This ornament, while a messy job, was fun to make. I wasn't sure at first what to use for the die cuts. Since my mom & I don't put up a tree, we have no real need for new ornaments. I figured I could give it to my brother & SIL, but they are not really frilly types. I finally remembered the "Small Planes" dies (discontinued) I have. They both love airplanes, so I figured this would be perfect!
I die cut several planes from watercolor paper. I used Ranger Multi Medium Matte to adhere them to my papier mache ornament. I have a small jar of the multi medium that has a brush integrated in the lid, so that turned out to be perfect--no waste, & no brush to clean! I used a roll of painter's tape to help balance the ball & hold it steady while I glued on the planes. Even with that, I still coated my fingers in glue!
I hung the ornament up to dry for a couple of hours while I did other things. After I came back, I coated it with black gesso. I ended up needing to apply 2 coats to get a solid coverage. I dried that with my heat tool, just so I could move on more quickly.
I mixed up Espresso Bean & metallic Copper acrylic craft paints to make a dark copper, & painted that on the ornament after the gesso was dry. I dried that again with my heat tool, and dry brushed some Light Turquoise craft paint on to highlight. I wasn't sure how this would turn out when I applied the gesso, since I didn't think the planes would show up. But I think it turned out great, & I'm sure they will like it, too!
