I was a bit stumped when I read Dina's challenge. How can I do a "face" card without being derivative? Of course, pretty much everything in art is a derivative of something else--at least partly. But I didn't want to copy someone exactly, and submit it. I did turn to Pinterest for ideas, though, and found penguin punch art cards. I have the Essentials by Ellen "Arctic Pals" stamp set, and got the inspiration for the greeting from that.
I chose the heart die for the penguin's face first. Then I picked a circle die about 1/2"-3/4" larger than the width of the heart. I also used an oval die to cut the flippers (wings?), & a triangle die from the "Pennants Mega" set for the beak.
For the hat, I used the hat & pompom stamps from "Birthday Bash." I stamped the hat in Fog ink first onto bristol paper, using my MISTI. I colored the white stripes in with a yellow Tombow marker. Then I placed the paper back in my MISTI, stamped over the Fog lines with Versamark, and heat embossed with Red Dragon powder. I used the same embossing powder for the pompom. Then I did all my die cutting, & set the pieces aside.
The greeting stamp in "Arctic Pals" is way too small for this design. So I used "Smitty's ABC's" & spelled it out on a teal cardstock strip. I stamped with Versamark, & heat embossed in white. That step probably took the longest, as the letter stamps are very fiddly to line up! I also had to leave space to stamp one of the "r's" separately, since there are only 2 in the set.
I assembled the penguin on my card so it looks like it's hanging over the strip, and glued the party hat to the top of its head. I did have to cut about 3/8" from the short flat side of the beak, since it was too long, but no big deal. I added googly eyes for some fun, and that finished this card. I will send this to Send a Smile 4 Kids, to cheer up a hospitalized child on his/her birthday!
