This psalm was written by David when he was in the wilderness of Judah and when he was on a run. He was waiting for God to help delivering him from his enemies, hungry and thirsty. David was not only thirsty and hungry physically, but also his soul hungry and thirsty for the Lord and his presence in his life. He remembered how God had helped him in the past and had faith that He would help him again.
We often feel in that we are in the middle of the dessert of our lives, feeling alone, and forgotten. But my friends... have faith and trust in His promises that He will not leave you alone nor forget you. God will not desert His children! When you come to Jesus and drink from His well, you will not be thirsty again and you will be satisfied (John 4:13-15).
