I fed the birds this summer for the first time. Imagine my surprise when a cardinal couple came regularly to my feeder. They never both came at the same time and it seemed the female was much friendlier than the male. Imagine my surprise when a few months later some strange looking birds began visiting. They were quite homely with mottled feathers. As more and more red began to appear I realized these homely birds were actually cardinal fledglings and they began turning beautiful right before my eyes. Christened the Christmas bird for its spectacular red color, the cardinal has become a symbol of the beauty and warmth of the holiday season. A glimpse of this brilliant bird brings cheer, hope and inspiration on a gray wintry day. As nature's reminder for us to focus on our faith, the cardinal's scarlet plumage represents the blood of Christ shed for the redemption of mankind.
