My laminator and iCraft Deco Foil arrived this week, so I wanted to try it out on a holiday card - and as luck would have it, these two card challenges had a great sketch and a holiday theme!!!
The card base is a top fold card made from Stampin' Up! Whisper White Thick cardstock (4.25"x 11" folded in half).
I stamped a holiday phrases background stamp from Rubber Stampede MANY years ago, but had never used. The ink was Memento Tuxedo Black stamped onto a 4"x 5.5" panel of SU Cherry Cobbler cardstock. This stamped panel was glued to the card base using Tombow glue.
The wreath was stamped using the SU "Wondrous Wreath" set with three-step stamping. I used my MISTI to ensure good alignment. It was then die cut using SU's matching "Wonderful Wreath" framelits dies.
To create the foil berries on the wreath, I stamped the berry stamp layer with Versamark, then ran the wreath, with the red Deco foil on top, through my new laminator. I was anxious to try out the laminator, so didn't allow it to heat up more than 5 minutes,,, so the berries didn't get full foil coverage. No problem, though, I used a Zig 3 Way Glue pen to dab where the berries needed more foil, then laid a scrap piece of foil over it and pressed to make the foil stick to the berries after I pulled the foil sheet off. The foil bow was made in a similar way.
I wanted to try out a method I had seen for foiling where you have a copy company create a solid black toner "copy" on cardstock, then you use dies to cut out your sentiment, and then run it through your laminator. I pre-heat the laminator about 20 minutes before running the diecuts through with red foil. It work MUCH better, but still had to use the glue to dab a few spots that didn't get foiled.
The black panel which would anchor my wreath and sentiment was cut 3.25" square, then its corners rounded with a Marvy punch. I used the Zig glue pen to dot the back of the diecut words, then applied them to the lower half of the black square.
The wreath was attached to the square with Mini Glue Dots, then backs of both the black square and wreath were generously covered with adhesive foam strips before attaching to the red main panel.
I discovered that getting a good photo of a foiled project is REALLY hard. I ended up using daylight from above, and front lit with a portrait umbrella light.
I an rating the difficulty level of this card as a "3" out of a possible "5" because of the hassled getting good foil coverage. I'm hoping that with added experience, foiling will become easier for me.
