This card was made for Try Stampin' on Tuesday's first technique challenge - Negative Space Coloring. The challenge and links to a video tutorial can be found at: http://trystampinontuesday.blogspot.com/
This technique involves stamping an image (preferably outline), the coloring around it, leaving the stamped image uncolored. I chose to use to use sponging as my coloring method, so had to create masks for the umbrella and handle. I used Martha Stewart's Adhesive Stencil Film, but there are several sticky mask papers you can use. When you sponge, this allows you to sponge right over the stamped image. Then you peel off the mask, and viola!
I had lightly stamped the umbrella with Stamin' Up! Smoky Slate, then masked it, and stamped the handle (so it wouldn't show through the umbrella). Then, after the Smoky Slate had dried I applied both the umbrella and handle masks. I used Post-It Notes to mask of the narrow vertical area I wanted to sponge with color. I shaded the colors from light to darker from the bottom up to make the sky look more stormy using a stamping sponge.
Then I stamped the raindrops with Versamark, and heat embossed Detail Silver Embossing Powder on them. (Be sure to use your Embossing Buddy to prevent stray powder from sticking where you don't want it!)
Heat embossing the umbrella was a little trickier... using my MISTI I stamped the umbrella with Versamark, then heat embossed it. Then I masked the umbrella and stamped the handle over the top of the mask so that only the pointy top and handle part got stamped with Versamark onto the paper. Then removed the umbrella mask and heat embossed the handle and umbrella all at the same time.
The sentiment was stamped with Versamark, and heat embossed with silver powder as well.
This panel was then glued to the Island Indigo card base with Tombow.
Helpful Tip: Since you will be stamping both the umbrella and the handle twice, be sure to place the two stamps in different parts of your MISTI so that you can accurately position the Versamark over the Smoky Slate.
