Boy did this challenge bring back a flood of awesome memories. My grandmother lived on a farm and they had goats, chickens, horses, cows, pigs and anything else that you could think of.
They also lived in a big old farm house. Back then there was no such thing as central heat and air. So the house was heated with a pot belly stove in the living room, and a fireplace in the dinning room and in grandma and grandpa's bedroom down stairs. The upstairs bedrooms were freezing cold.
My grandmother would get with other women in the summer and they would make quilts to use on their beds for the winter. I remember grandpa made grandma a quilt rack that lowered from the ceiling and when not in use was raised back up with the unfinished quilt still on it waiting to be worked on the next time they got together to quilt.
I remember spending the night with my grandparents and grandma would have so many quilts on us that we couldn't move. What a great time that was. I sure do miss this and her quilts that were made with love.

I started leaving a comment on this on my phone and lost it! Back upstairs now, so I can say again what a sweet card this is, Ruthie. The quilt is beautiful but I especially love the little pincushion which reminds me of the one in my first ever sewing box. Thanks too for sharing such great memories, sort of made me think of John Denver's song about Grandmas's Feather Bed. I grew up in a big old house with no central heating and I well remember cold bedrooms, and the weight of blankets and old down quilts. You get very used to the lightness of modern duvets, LOL. We used to have a rack in the kitchen that raised and lowered - it was next to the range and was for drying clothes, but I'm imagining the rack your grandad made must have been something similar - and what a great idea! I know I sew much less since DH stopped travelling for work and I couldn't just leave everything up for two or three days.

I agree with Sabrina. Such a wonderful story. I could almost feel all those quilts piled on top. Thanks for translating into words your quilt of memories.
Blessings this New Year

Lovely quilt and lovely story. Like Sabrina, the pincushion stirred memories for me. My mom was never much of a seamstress (that's a whole 'nother story), but she did have one of those tomato pin cushions.

LOL---know what you mean of the big old farm houses as when very young stayed with grandparents and no indoor bathroom and as you said cold. Your star just pops with the colors used, nice addition of extras and great sentiment.

What a cheerful and happy quilt card! I love the polka dots! and those sewing embellishments are so cool!
I grew up in one of those farmhouses .............remembering the cold and the chamber pots and getting dressed downstairs in front of the stove. My little brother even burned his little tush one day while getting dressed
