I started the wood-grain stencil first and left the borders and center in blank/white. I then stamped the images and applied the stencil with inks. Of course, I worked on it -- one little area at a time. Since the images are quite small and detailed, I strongly recommend a small stencil brush like this or this. If your budget allows you, this Cadillac version of stencil brushes is the way to go. It is on my wish list, too.
After I finished adding colors, I decided to take it up a notch. Since it's covered with a stencil, I use the Stampendous Boss Gloss Ink Embossing Ink to cover the bird and clear-embossed it. The Boss Gloss Embossing Ink is handy when you want to emboss a small and controlled area (such as the bird). I had it for years and it's always there when I need it.
