FS397 Marble Quatrefoil for Jennifer
Added to Favorite

Photo Details
Poster: gabalot

I could not get a good indoor picture. I can't understand why the flower/sentiment/bottom is blurry? Go figure? I did the best I could and will try again later, in the daylight (IF my camera will work then because it's fickle!)

CONGRATS to Jennifer (mother's daughter), our new FS for this week. She is a fellow Teapotter Sistah who I adore. Not only does she have a kind heart, she is creative and does the most wonderful, unique stitching on some of her cards. I cannot do that. Hee! I chose to case this card. Love it! I made the marble/quatrefoil panel my main card and added just one Prima flower to it. I cut leaves from my MFT embossed leaves die in a SU med green (can't remember color), and "pressed" them into my SU old olive ink pad to highlight the embossing. Stamped my SU sentiment on vellum. I added a white MFT dainty lace border.

Note that for more dimension, I cut the nail polish faux marble paper with the quartrefoil plate. I cut a 6x6 piece of Scor Tape to 4.25 x 5.5 and adhered it to the same size piece of cardstock. I carefully attached the entire quartrefoil panel to it. I had to replace one or two small pieces that fell out. Doing it this way kept all of the pieces intact and I didn't have to glue all of the individual pieces in. I then cut the quartrefoil panel in white and fit the frame atop the marble. You could just put the quatrefoil frame over the marble but I liked the added "depth" from cutting both. NOTE: I saw on Jennifer McGuire's blog that when she die cuts something that has many pieces that she wants to keep intact, she uses Glad Press n Seal wrap. I've used it to cover food containers and it sticks really good. I don't have anymore and I forgot to buy more. You could probably trim it and adhere it directly to your card or mat panel with Scor Tape (it's slick and I don't know how well a tape runner or glue would work with it?)

I was also inspired by this rug at Surya, the IC challenge webstore that Audrie took us to last Saturday. My faux marble turned out to have light brown and tan with a subtle pink overtone. My cover die is the PTI quatrefoil die.

My card is also for last Thursday's WT491 challenge to use a sturdy substance to represent strength, in memory of the U.S. 911 terrorist attack. I choose marble. To create my faux marble, I used a nail polish technique that I saw on a blog years ago.

TECHNIQUE: Cut two of the same size pieces of watercolor paper. (To fit my quatrefoil cover plate, mine are 4.25 x 5.5, an A2 card. Select a disposable container that will accommodate the paper you want to "dip." Add water to about half full. Choose your nail polish colors (Mine are light pink, white-ish tan and light brown.) One at a time, drizzle/pour each nail polish onto the water. Use a disposable knife or fork/spoon handle to "swirl" the nail polish to the desired pattern. Be careful not to go too deep into the water or the polish will "fall" down into the water or rush to the sides of the container. You want it to stay on the surface of the water. When you like the pattern, carefully lay your watercolor paper on the polish. I held it above and dropped it onto the polish. Lightly press it down so it can absorb the polish. Lift it out straight, trying to keep it level so it doesn't run too much. Lay it down flat (I put a paper towel on top of a flattened plastic bag from the grocery store to lay it on.) Immediate lay your second piece of watercolor paper over the first, pressing it so it absorbs some of the polish. Try not to move the paper around or it might smear. Take the papers apart. You need to do this part quickly because the polish is sticky and the papers will want to stick together. Set them on the prepared surface to dry. At room temp they dry in about half an hour, or so. I let them dry overnight. This technique does take a good amount of nail polish. I used two .25 oz and one .50 oz bottles that were half or more filled. I used four full .50 oz bottles when I did it a long time ago and I got four pressings from it. I remember two were strong colors, one was good and the other acceptable but lighter. I don't know if the quality of the nail polish matters, or not.

I know that's a lot of info but I wanted to be sure to share the links and this technique with you.

THANK YOU for looking. Your comments are ALWAYS appreciated!

I really admire the way you used the lattice die in your card. The background is incredible and so much work involved. I can imagine the mess I would get into if I tried it!!! Days of cleaning up afterwards.

Gabby - this is beautiful! I'm so glad I spotted it today. It's a fascinating sounding technique - but there's not even one bottle of nail polish in this house for me to try it with.
