I've been away for a few days helping my oldest DD and SIL pack and move to Philadelphia. Lots of emotion and stress so it felt good to tackle this challenge today. Our Mixability challenges have sure taken me out of my comfort zone and I'm not completely sure I'm thrilled with the outcome here. Don't you just wish sometimes that you could hit the undo on a step! This has so many layers of "stuff" I started with my torn strips of dp, stamped & embossed pieces and a tag from a pair of jeans. I used Modge Podge to glue this onto a base of dp which I'd glued to a piece of particle board. I came home from the move with a whole stack of these cool pieces that had been used to stabilize the corners of a box that some new shelves for the new apartment came in.Here's the step that took me down the muddy path-I spritzed with some Tsukineko ink spray and got too much of the terra cotta color. So, I thought if I coated with Gesso it would pull some of that color out and tone things down a bit, but instead it just added to the muddiness. I used a wet brush to try to remove some of this and also rubbed with a wipe....more muddiness. After drying I went back with some sponges and added back in some color-Turquoise, Suede and Riding Hood Red. My next interesting choice was to glop Gesso through a reverse of a die. Unfortunately, I didn't have my mask tight enough and ended up with an extra "halo" of Gesso around my raised area. Back with the ink spray and sponges to try to soften the white around the Damask area. I also used my Versamarker and some mixed ep to emboss a metallic finish to the thick Gesso. I then used a copper ink pad to add some more highlights around. I tore a strip of embossed brick wall and sponged color onto it. My butterflies are punched out of CitraSolv Magic paper and backed with a second butterfly cut into two and layered behind. I crumpled and sponged my sentiment and added some gem accents to it and the butterflies. I die cut some leaves then spritzed them and embossed them.

I think this looks cool! I would never have guessed that the gold/copper embossed part(which I really liked as soon as I saw this) had so many steps involved..lol! But you had fun, right?

I think this totally works! Forget all you said about how this or that didn't go as planned - your result is so textural and balanced, despite all the many different elements and techniques. I agree with True - your use of the red makes all the rest come into focus and pop!

But wasn't it fun to just play with all that 'stuff'? I think that is what I like about this challenge, there is no right or wrong. So this is just perfect! It has the feel of the exterior of a dilapidated city building, contrasted with the beauty of nature. Great job!

Some days are like that, but the end result of your day is this fantastic piece! I think it's awesome, and I love the heat embossing on the gesso - I wouldn't have thought of that ever! Really, Gail, it's terrific!

I'm wanting to dip my toe into this Mixability thing, and picked your work from the rip and paste challenge gallery - cause it was just the look I want to achieve.
Then I read of your experience making this card, laughed out loud cause I really could feel your pain, and now I really have to question my sanity! But if my project comes out looking half as good as yours, it will all be worth it.
