these are the materials I used. standard 3/16 inch foam core board. The back, sides and top, are all one piece from a 20x30 sheet of foam core. The foam core was scored and cut in just the right places on the backside (where I put all the measurement lines), and then folded to the front. I offset some cuts so that the top piece overlaps the tops of the sides exactly the width of the sides. And the bottom was cut so that it would sit just inside the side pieces which then set directly on the table. That was so the top and sides would be strong enough to put other things on top of the unit.
The shelves were made from mat board. I wouldn't recommend using this stuff if you have to go and buy as it is quite spendy. I used it because I came into a large stack of bright yellow mat board awhile back, and having been looking for a use for it. The color does not lend well to frame pictures. So, this was the perfect use for some of it. It is very stiff and strong stuff. So it was perfect for this project. It is only 1/16 inch thick, so by using this for the shelves instead of foam core, I was able to get more rows into the unit. if you don't have a stack of hideously colored mat board just lying around, maybe balsa wood would be a good substitution. Or a couple layers of semi stiff consumer cardboard glued together might work (for a really frugal solution).
